My DSs could do it at around that age (they have 6-letter names). I did spend some time teaching them though, I thought it would be nice that they could write their names!

lunavix · 21/08/2006 08:12

I think it's a sign of being intelligent but not hideously unusual.

My friends dd is 3.10 too (October?) and can write her first name, most of her surname (gets one letter wrong) and can do other similar stuff. My friend isn't entirely sure why, she's sure she did it all with her eldest dd too who went to school barely knowing what a pencil is for!

hulababy · 21/08/2006 08:14

All varies so much at this age. DD starts school in September. Some of her friends can write their names and other odd words. Some can't write at all.

It is all fab though and if she enjoys it, keep encouraging her. My DD loves writing, and will spend ages at her desk, pencil in hand. She thinks she is a solicitor like daddy

thanks

im so proud of her

i think she is so good at it because it is something she really enjoys (like everything else and all of us i suppose!)

it never ceases to amaze me how quickly they learn

Depends on whether then name is Tom or Zacharia IMO

longwaytogo · 21/08/2006 09:07

my 2nd dd could write her name when she went to nursery but she had been in day care with only 5 other children in her room so had someone else to teach her. dd3 goes to nursery in a couple of weeks and she is just not interested - i think if someone else can teach them then they come on better.

Elibean · 21/08/2006 09:19

My neice and my BF's dd could both write their names a bit before they were 4, and they also had someone to teach them.
I agree with Colditz too - I could read (and write) three letter words by 3.5, but not long ones. That said, my brother took ages to read and write - he just wasn't interested, his thing was drawing. Thing is, reading/writing was (well, is, but no time these days) my passion - and art is his, so yes, depends what a kid is into I reckon. Sounds like your dd is going to love her books, Nailpolish

nailpolish · 21/08/2006 11:49

what do you mean, someone to teach them? that person is me, her mother!

sounds like damned good pencil control
My dd (3.10) can spell her name out loud and has done for some time, but has NO pencil control at all
She can however add and subtract and count up to 50

CountessDracula · 21/08/2006 11:54

My dd has done this since she was about 3 and 2 months, I remember she wrote her own name on xmas cards for her little nursery friends last year. She has always been obsessed with letters though. She is nearly 4 and can write Mummy, Daddy and her name now and some of her drawings are brilliant! She does spend hours doodling and writing and drawing.

barnsleytykes · 21/08/2006 11:58

my ds has been able to since about 3 hes 4 now, but he also counts and nows the numbers up to 100, but not many at nursery can do this, so i would say well done to her

CountessDracula · 21/08/2006 12:01

tbh I didn't know it was unusual

gigwig · 21/08/2006 12:07

DS - 3.9 - cant really. Doesn't want to try even! Too busy with making building sites!

longwaytogo · 21/08/2006 18:00

nailpolish what I mean someone to teach them is that mine have never done anything for me (their mother) but respond well when someone else sits with them and does things.

Pinotmum · 21/08/2006 18:04

Ds will be 4 yo in OCtober and can write his name and some numbers but his fine motor skills are not as good as dd's at the same age so I wouldn't expect as much. Dd has always loved writing etc and is a brilliant reader and writer now but then she is only 5 so plenty of time to plateau and everyone else catch up.

sleepysooz · 21/08/2006 18:09

All kiddies are different, my 10yo ds could'nt read or write till he was 6 but my 2.10 yo twins the dd can hold a pencil correctly and do controlled circles and put eyes in, she can colour in extremely well, so every child is different, but it does sound like you have a clever little sausage on your hands!

Sunnysideup · 21/08/2006 18:34

longwaytogo, I agree - with some children the key is having someone else OTHER than mum to teach them to do things! I fondly looked forward to sitting with my DS and helping him write his first words etc....

four years down the line, the reality of it is that I rarely SIT with him at all, as he is a human whirlwind and sees sitting down as something for wimps, and he also really quite dislikes me doing things like this with him...I was amazed when one of his pre-school ladies said "he always tries hard and is eager to please". Well, he is never eager to please ME.

Your DD sounds clever nailpolish! My neice was like this, loved her writing and did loads of practice at home...hope she carries on with how well she's doing with it.
