Getting DS to wear shoes..........

DS is all but walking so we took him to Clarks to get feet measured. Trouble is couldn't get shoes on his feet cos he kept screwing his toes up tight and wouldn't release. Got both shoes on eventually but 20 mins later screaming in pain cos he had cramp - his foot was in spasm I felt so guilty.

Another thing he always does tho is when he stands up he screws his toes up and puts all his weight on them - i've tried it and it really really HURTS!!!

Anyone else had experience of this and what was the outcome?

My ds was similar and refused to put shoes on in Clarks. We waited a while and used those soft leather shoes which he was happy to wear and which protected his feet from glass and muck etc while we were out. I think it is quite good for their feet to have soft shoes for as long as possible. When he was a little older we went to a local independent shoe shop where the staff were excellent (sorry Clarks, but your staff round here are just crap). They spent a lot of time playing and engaging with ds before trying to fit any shoes, and soon relaxed him enough to have his feet measured and try on shoes quite happily.

I would wait a while and just keep your ds in soft shoes until he is walking well. Hopefully he will be that little bit older and more co-operative. HTH.

When DS started walking he would curl his toes up, Clarkes were able to measure his feet and we bought him a pair of cruisers.

DD had tiny feet though so we just put soft soled shoes on her to keep her feet warm while we were out, she was almost 2 before she started walking. Even now at 7 1/2 she is only a size 10.

As long as shoes fit properly just put them on for a few minutes at a time to start with and then build the time up, but there is no rush, (I know how impaitient you must feel to take on first darling walk) but those soft crawlers are fine to start with, especially in this nice dry weather?

You could always bribe with favourite treat whilst putting shoes on, praising all the time!

Well had another go but I had to laugh - I gave DS one shoe to 'look at' and went to put other on. He crawled away from me at the speed of light into the kitchen and hid it in the vegetable rack! Then when I tried to put other on he just screwed toes up and did a proper cheeky giggle! After that I was laughing as much as him so I gave up!

Theres always tomorrow.....
