Alternative to Stop n Grow for dd who loves the taste?!

DD1 is 5 and sucks her finger. Her teeth are already seriously crooked (big overbite)and we are desperately trying to get her to kick the habit before she loses her baby teeth over the next year or so.

We have tried both Stop n Grow and the more expensive Mavala brand, but she has admitted that she has got used to the taste and is prepared to suck even harder to get it off, for the longer term benefit of being able to suck her finger during the night.

We have also tried cotton gloves (she has eczema so we have plenty), but she bites holes in the fingers, no matter how many times we sew them up.

Other people have suggested fabric plasters, but she has a latex allergy, so this probably is not a good idea in the long term. We are at our wits end. I had to wear a brace for 2 years from the age of 14 so have tried the doom and gloom thing, but she thinks they are like jewellry! We are doing star charts already to tackle poor sleep due to the eczema, so don't think we can overload her with more!

Any suggestions?! Many thanks.

My 12 year old son started taking Eye-Q oil about three years ago to help with mild ADHD and a fantastic side effect was the clearing up of eczema!I no longer have to moisturise his skin or worry about non bio washing products. Was this just a coincidence?I think it is worth trying the oil simply for skin benefits. He is also vegetarian and a bit fussy.Any tips?

you can get sparkly brace nowadays, it wouldn't be the end of the world if she had braces and it's obviously a great comfort for her

We also use the EyeQ oil and have done so for about a year and a half, but unfortunately haven't seen the results you have except during the winter (dd's eczema is much worse in the heat).

Thanks for the info on the sparkly braces. What worries me is I hear orthodonists now refuse to treat on the NHS if the problem is self inflicted ie if they suck their thumbs or fingers until a very old age.

very much doubt if orthodontists can refuse to treat for that reason - they are children ffs!

Hi Utka
Did you have any luck finding out more info? Our dd is 13 months and sucks two fingers backwards - spoke to my dentist last week about it and he advised definitely trying to wean on to a dummy which we're doing in conjunction with stop'n grow. She's still sucking despite them tasting vile - I tried!
