Desperate for help with 6 week old :(

I have had two DS that were no problems in regards to sleep (although it was over 10 years ago eek!!) DD was born 6 weeks ago and I think the poor mite is suffering with colic Sad . I may be wrong, and if anyone has experienced anything similar I am open to other possibilities.

so a typical 24 hours goes like this....

6:30am - wakes and has 3-4oz

8:00am - screams until she is fed but will only take an oz or two.

11:00am - wakes normally but wants feeding (hungry cry) will take 2-3oz.

will then sleep until approx 3pm (deep sleep)

6-7pm - wakes normally for a feed 3-4oz

this is.where it then goes bad Sad Sad

9pm - wakes screaming for a feed - 3-4oz.

10:30 - no sleep but will scream again for more food (I have even tried offering water to no avail) 2-3oz

I then sit with her while she screams for food, but wont take more than an ounce until 3am Sad Sad

Finally, out of exhaustion she falls asleep until 6:30 when the day starts again.

I have 2 DS and a DSD that still need to be taken to.school and have attention etc so as you can imagine I am starting to struggle (not that I would admit in RL)

Anyway, today I noticed that if I led her on her tummy to sleep (purely by chance) that she sleeps soundly for 3 hours at a time and seems less fractious. I've heard horror stories about doing this, but dont know what else to do. If anyone could offer experience/support etc I would be very grateful.

One very exhausted Mummy Sad Sad Sad

Sounds like my DS ! Who is now almost 9 weeks.

Changed to comfort milk (colic and constipation) also at 6 weeks diagnosed with silent reflux ( after 6 weeks of me going to the doctors weekly knowing something wasn't right and being fobbed off, researching myself!)

Prescribed infant gaviscon, noticed a difference within about a day and half, now he is by no means "sorted" but he is so so so much better .

My dp would drive up and down the motorway to settle him and he would still be screaming until the early hours .

Like others have posted the first thing that sprung to my mind when reading this was silent reflux.
My DS had this as a baby and much of what you say sounded familiar.
They like to feed little and often when they have silent reflux as the milk initially soothes the acid feeling.
DS was diagnosed at six weeks after what felt like a complete nightmare few weeks. He was given gaviscon which made a difference at first and then when symptoms came back he was put on ranitidine and was so much better.
We also changed to comfort milk.
I would pop to the gp and see what they think.

I hope your lO is feeling much better. If not, try putting her on either of her sides. My lo(4wks) had the same problem but sleeping on the side has made a big difference ( 3hrs of sleep per session ).All the best!

Lactose intolerance is seriously something you should consider - I agree with a previous contributor - I have known many babies to have this - including one of my own. ask doc or health nurse about changing the formula to lactose free - works wonders.

Oh big hugs. I have been here! I haven't read all the replies so apologies if this has been mentioned but your DD sounds just like my DS did. It turned out he had silent reflux. It took a number of GP visits to convince them (tricky to diagnose and the uneducated GPs will dismiss it for colic). We started on a trial and error of meds and settled on ranitidine which really helped. There are also special formulas you can try. You can also get a special reflux wedge for the cot/Moses basket. It's a specific angle, again helped too. Baby massage is also good. My HV referred us to a free course. Do some googling on reflux and see if it sounds like your daughter. I also echo the cranial osteopath.

When I was going through this I posted on here and I remember a few people saying 'it will get better'. It took us awhile but we now have a happy little boy who sleeps much better. You will get there too x

We had this (maybe two hours of sleep a night if we were lucky) and it was reflux. Unfortunately nothing worked apart from the passage of time (we tried colief, Gripe water, gaviscon, prescription meds, cot raised etc etc). Nothing worked until DS learned to roll and could happily settle on his front. I never put him on his front before as I was so scared of sids. So I just went to hell and back for six months. You have my enormous sympathies, it will get better. Promise!
