I've read they normally roll over at around 3 months. My ds is nearly 4 months and showing no signs at all of even trying to roll over. is this normal?

DS rolled at 4.5 months.

DD is nearly 11 months and hasn't rolled yet.

I am not worried .

Totally normal.

DS only started to roll over once he had mastered crawling...at about 10 and a half months. He hated being on his tummy and would not tolerate "tummy time" thank you very much!!!

mawbroon · 15/08/2006 12:55

My ds is almost 10 months and won't/can't roll over from his back. He can do it from his tum, but doesn't like to for some reason.

coppertop · 15/08/2006 12:57

s1 rolled at around 4mths and used rolling to get around.

I can't remember ds2 ever bothering to roll over. He hated being on his front.

Dd is almost 5mths. She rolled over once at about a week old but has never done it since. She too hates being on her front.

dd was 6 weeks, ds was 4 days frightened the life out of me and had to call dp in to witness him doing it again as i was convinces i'd been hallucinating from sleep deprivation!

wrinklytum · 15/08/2006 13:05

4 MONTHS!!!Dont worry. My ds rolled at about 6 months.dd is a l;ate developer and is now 8.5 months and still cant roll over from back to front.Shes only just getting her sitting balance. Please dont worry your little un will do it in thir own time at their own pace!!!!

laudaud · 15/08/2006 13:11

well this thread certainly confirms there is no such thing as normal - as with most other things they will all develop at their own pace. DD rolled at 2 months but others in our NCT group were more like 10 months.

whatstheplanstan · 15/08/2006 13:58

DD rolled back to front at about 17 weeks (took a week or so to figure out the second arm!) but rolled front to back for the first time yesterday (21 weeks)- very excitng! Now we have the problem than she just rolls and rolls across the floor so we have to keep an eye on her even more closely! So be careful what you wish for!

laudaud is right - there is no such thing as normal! In our group we noticed that the ones who aren't rolling are more keen at standing up on their mums laps, or are more 'chatty' etc. They are all doing different things at different times. Friends baby showed no signs of wanting to roll, but did back to front followed by front to back all in the space of about a week!

I wouldn't worry, just give your ds plenty of time playing on the floor and he'll figure it out in his own time.

thx for the question glad I am not the only one thinking about that. My dd is 5 1/2 months and goes from back to tum and then hates it after about 5 mins max. She shows no signs of wanting to get back on her back. She started sleeping on her side a few weeks ago and only once then went on her tum in cot and we all knew about it !

laudaud · 15/08/2006 14:52

by the way do you leave DS lying on his front sometimes? Read somewhere that although it is recommended that they are put lyng on their back when going to bed you should also put them lying on their front sometimes during the day to help them develop.

whatstheplanstan · 15/08/2006 15:29

Yep thats true. DD had to go to physio as had some neck problems (with think due to difficult delivery). We were encouraged to put her on her front as much as possible in the day - did you know average age of crawling has increased since the 'back to sleep' campaign as babies take longer to get strength in their necks.

Anyway, dd hated it so what we did is put her on our lap, face down, with her head over the edge of our knees. Only for a bit at a time, but because her face was clear and not squished into the floor she tolerated it for much longer.

mmittens · 15/08/2006 16:52

I put him on his tummy for a while each day but he normally screams after a couple of minutes so i have to put him back on his back to calm him down
