Books for babies

Hi there

I have a newborn baby and I am looking to start a library of books for him. Does anyone have recommendations for baby's first books?

Black & white books are good for v little babies. My 6mo also likes Eric Carle's The Very Busy Spider; Hug by Jez Alborough I think; Mr Magnolia by Quentin Blake; and best of all Goodnight Moon.

I say "likes", I mean "smiles occasionally when I read them yet again"

The black and white books are great for babies as they play to their level of visual development.

Quite soon my DS loved nice, clear photo books. Bright Baby do some really nice ones.

Our two started loving board photo books (like www.amazon.co.uk/First-Farm-Lets-Get-Working/dp/1405364041/ref=pd_sim_b_19?ie=UTF8&refRID=03NZKT8GDQ7QSNCWJXZ2 ) when they were about 14 months. It was like suddenly a light went on and they needed to know the name of everything NOW. TBH they weren't bothered with books before that (and still aren't into storybooks at nearly 2).

Would highly recommend the 'Amazing Baby' books (google them) - black and white based books with lots of black and white baby photos. All 3 of mine adored them from very early on.

Any of the 'That's Not My...' books.

Also do an amazon search on the 'Busy' book series ('Busy Farm', 'Busy Park' etc). Great for when baby is a little older ie six months plus.

'Dear Zoo' and 'Hungry Caterpillar' both fab too.

Another vote for peekaboo series. Also "baby's first noisy nursery rhymes" has been a favourite for nearly a year now (DS is 14 months now). Overall, touchy-feely books with flaps are always fun. You can borrow a lot from local libraries - and just go there for fun and you'll see what your little one likes.

Anything you can read with fun intonation. They like the sing song of your voice and you can find things to talk about in the pictures.

The Gruffalo is a modern classic (but I personally never got on with the rhythm of the author's other books).

I buy every new baby in my circle of friends a copy of Each Peach Pear Plum.

I would recommend hardback/card versions of 'we are going on a bear hunt' 'each peach pear plum,' 'Peepo!'

Cloth books are good for teeny babies, we have jelly car ones that look new after going through the washing machine but are actually 7 years old. My 5 month old likes them (reaches desperately to grab them and chew and flicks backwards and forwards through the pages when I'm driving)
