Imaginary friends

Can we have another thread about them, please? My ds's are a constant source of joy and mystery to me.

Tonight while having a goodnight cuddle in bed he suddenly burst out laughing and said

"Von's being very funny. He's pretending his nose has fallen off!"

My dd has a pink dinosaur called Bob, who lives behind the sofa and there is also Little Gran who will suddenly 'appear' on her open palm. It cracks me up, her sleepsuit snuggley has also been given a personality by her e.g. snuugley likes this or that. Brilliant!

My oldest dd has 3 little friends called 'salfie. alfie & nalfie'! it's so sweet to hear her talk about them & blame them when she gets into trouble!

I just don't understand how it works. Does ds really hear and see Von doing these things, or does he know that it's a sort of game and he is just pretending?

Does anyone have any knowledge about this, or could anyone direct me to a good book or site to read up on it?

I am a bit sad. In the last month or so 4yo DD seems to have forgotten all about her two imaginery friends, Bella and Cotcha.Cotcha has been around for over 2 years, Bella just over a year...but nothign recently. She used to make me laugh with them. End of an era?

edam · 12/08/2006 21:24

I bow down before your star-status, pelvic (have always thought yours is one of the best MN names, tbh, don't know what the woman was talking about).

But back to the topic, ds has an imaginary little brother called Daniel. I sometimes have to lay an extra place at the table for him, and am NOT allowed to clear his piece of toast away (I do it later, when ds has forgotten about it). And occasional tiny dinosaurs/fish that appear as if by magic, on the palm of his hand.

FrannyandZooey · 12/08/2006 21:25

oh hulababy

I hate them growing up, don't you? I say to ds "Please stay just like you are now, forever" and he says "But mummy, I have to grow up and be an adult"
