You know when they want to walk, and you really don't want them too...

well can I ask how you cope?

Just returned from a walk with 18mo dd and its been hell.
Took the trike and let her walk about 1/2 an hour but you know, they get slower and slower because she's tired but the very mention of getting back on the bike ends in a sheer meltdown nearly on both sides
How do you manage without just making them and thinking about buying earplugs the whole way home? Because as im on my own and have to walk our dog regularly im about to start crying at the mere thought of walkies.

Shes really good at holding hands and not running off I might add!- I can mostly direct her the way

Have you got a backpack for her? They often like those as they can see and feel close to you at the same time.

neversleepagain · 05/03/2014 17:01

No advice but I feel your pain. My twins are 17 months and will not entertain the thought of going the buggy or the trike. They want to walk. And they want to go in different directions. When it comes to putting them back in buggy/trike we have a double meltdown, back arching, kicking, snot, tears.

I am tired. Very tired.

MikeTheShite · 05/03/2014 17:04

I can imagine sleep!
yes ive got a little life backpack Smile rein thingy

Sorry, what I meant was a backpack for you to carry her in ... I often found mine didn't mind that even if he didn't like the buggy

ProfessionalKiller · 05/03/2014 18:16

I've found wet days are easiest. You can just keep pointing out the next puddle.

Bribery sometimes works. As in "when we get home we can have a snack/watch toy story/do a jigsaw"

That said I still often end up carrying ds (2.3yrs) despite the fact I've. Already got dd (7months) in the sling...

mawbroon · 05/03/2014 18:21

I haven't experienced it with one that young, mine didn't take their first steps til 16 and 20 months!

But ds1 in particular just would not walk any distance until he was about 5yo. When they were wee, it was right, I've had enough and fling them in the back carrier, or get them to go on their balance bikes.

MintyChops · 05/03/2014 18:47

Bribery definitely and I used to put the dog's lead onto my DS1 and make a game of it....

MikeTheShite · 05/03/2014 18:49

A back carrier could be ideal.

I don't want to moan about her really as shes not been half as bad as I thought (running off)since we walk around a lake most days so im lucky in that respect
I think she's at that age where communication and reasoning is difficultSmile

I would use a buggy and have a snack ready to distract them as you strap them in. I never understamd why a trike would be comfy - surely sitting in the cold (which is essentially what they're doing on one as no physical movement) isn't comfy!

Dd is a bit older so I explain that she's tired and she can go in - today for the first time she climbed in of her own accord after a long walk!!!

FlyingGoose · 05/03/2014 18:57

neversleepagain mine are 19 months. it is hard work!

CruCru · 20/05/2014 16:48

When she is a bit older, consider getting a balance bike (DS has the early rider and it is awesome).

feesh · 20/05/2014 18:44

My twins have to go back in the buggy and I don't take no for an answer. No bribes, no arguments. I have hip problems so they don't get any say in it.

If we are going somewhere suitable, we take their Step2 Wagon instead - they LOVE that and will always happily get back in it without any fuss. It was a great investment!
