Don't think its unusual - DD couldn't jump for ages, much later than I expected (can't stop her now - she's 6.7). DS is 2.8 and can't yet .

Thanks JackieNo, we stuck her on a bouncy castle the other day and she did'nt know what to do

Don't think it's unusual - DD couldn't jump until she was over 3.

DS could jump at 2 - think it was because DD had one of those small trampolenes in the back garden (the kind with the handle they hold on to), so he was used to the feeling of his feet leaving the ground.

He hates bouncy castles though!!!

DD couldn't do it at her 2 year check and HV wanted me to get her looked at by the GP. As we seemed to spend months at the GPs with various ailments between the 4 of us I couldn't bear to take her.

Plus... she had her hips scanned after 'different bottom creases' when she was 8 weeks old and was fine.

She still can't jump properly now (2.6) but isn't a jumping sort of child IYKWIM. I will follow it up when she's 3.

Gem13 · 10/08/2006 16:10

Incidentally DD only started to walk at 18 months, so I can't underestand why the HV would expect her to jump 6 months later.

bobsmum · 10/08/2006 16:18

Marne - ds still couldn't jump at his 3 year check and thye were a little concerned and asked loads of other questions about his physical progress. He also was generally a bit slower than his peers at running/climbing etc. He was referred for physio by the GP and HV after they spotted his right foot turned out. He's since seen a couple of paediatricians at the hospital who've said he's flat footed. He'll improve over time, but physio will ensure he re-learns how to walk properly instead of his adjusted way.

We've still not had a physio appt. yet 6 months later but that seems to be normal apparently. But he started to jump and leave the floor finally at just over 3.5.

DD1 started jumping for the first time at around 2.5....she was a late-ish walker (16 months) and tried for ages. Once she found out she could do it though, she did'nt stop - she's now 2.7 and jumping all over the place.

aDAdOnMumsnet · 10/08/2006 16:36

DD still not jumping at 2.8, despite trying hard - don't think it's cause for concern, particularly as it's one of those things that is really hard to teach a child.

Reading this thread though, maybe we should ask GP next time we have an appointment about something.

My ds has been quite late jumping. He's 3 in October and he can jump now but its a fairly new skill. I think jumping is overrated!

Overrun · 10/08/2006 21:15

My ds1 is 3 and a half and still can't jump properly. He sort of scissors his legs, does this count?
I mentioned it his three year old check, but HV not worried at all, so I'm not. He can run now, but did that late, but can't pedal. Now I am thinking I should worry.

throckenholt · 10/08/2006 21:16

ds1 couldn't jump til he was at least 3 (ds2 & 3 - twins - however could jump at about 18 months).

expatinscotland · 10/08/2006 21:17

DD1 didn't jump properly until she was 3. Now she can't stop.

Tenalady · 10/08/2006 21:17

Dont worry whats normal. My ds 4.5 cant catch a ball but he can play draughts and speak french!

Tenalady · 11/08/2006 12:14

sorry I didnt mean that to sound like a boast, it just tickled me when the nursery teacher showed some concern that he couldnt catch a ball from their tick off list of things you must be able to do at a certain age.

Some children have better skills elsewhere and sometimes a darn sight more useful.

Ds and dd learned to jump at almost exactly the same time - only dd was about 18m and ds was nearly 4yo.

I'm sure having a trampoline in the living room helped them both learn how to jump.

Nemo1977 · 11/08/2006 12:25

think it completely depends on child..ds was a very early walker[8.5mths] and therefore followed on with a lot of physical things very early. Other friends have kids who havent jumped until nearer to 3yrs old but walked later etc.
