I've just noticed that my 9mo has lip tie, any experience?

Had a very difficult start to breastfeeding, was agony for weeks and weeks. MW checked for tongue-tie at the time and said it was fine and that I just had delicate skin and it would get better. Which it did. Baby is now nearly 9months and have had no probs with feeding since about 2.5 months old.

But something, don't know what, made me think of lip tie today and I just looked and think she has it. It would explain the difficulty feeding in the early days. Why didn't I get a second opinion at the start?

I'm now panicking as she's starting teething and I'm worried about it affecting her top teeth. I'm kicking myself for not noticing sooner :(

What do I do? GP? Is it going to be horrible for her having it snipped? I feel so awful :(

My DD had lip tie and posterior tongue tie. Lip tie was lasered, but tbh I don't think it made a difference to BFing because the lip still doesn't flap up when feeding. Interestingly, both teeth have come through and the gap is still there, so I dint think it made a difference to the teeth too. I'm not sure it was worth getting done tbh

That's interesting ginger, everything I've read so far seems to make out it's the miracle cure for breastfeeding issues so it's important to know that this is not always the case.

Actually, I have been wondering about whether lasering the lip tie would guarantee prevention of a gap in DD's teeth as the little ridge going between the where the teeth will come through would still be there iyswim?

DDs was lasered at 3 months and now at 9 months the gap is still there, though both top two teeth have come through.

I've read ALOT and tongue ties, and tbh I find the claims over rated.

It has made a big difference to breastfeeding for me, the change was immediate. The upper lip is now in the correct position when feeding. Feeding seems to have become much more efficient, baby cobbler is going for MUCH longer between feeds in the last two days.

I am finding doing the stretches a little daunting, I really have to screw my courage to the sticking point in order to be forceful enough.

I just emailed Dr Levinkind ColdTea, he was very helpful.

There are many stories of instant relief on tongue tie release, but there are plenty of stories where things take time. Ties can cause tensions in the jaw/head/neck which might need to be released over time with the help of cranial osteopathy.

Also, remember that ties can be anterior only, which are the type that I think get instant relief when released. Or posterior, or both. I think that if an anterior tie is released by somebody who is not clued up on posterior ties, they may miss a posterior one, and there will not be instant relief on release of the anterior tie as long as a posterior tie remains.

Bear in mind too that there is MUCH more to tongue tie than feeding problems. Revision is not just to aid feeding.
