my 8 month old baby can't sit up

Not sure if I should be concerned - my 8 month old baby boy can crawl (since he was 4 months!), stand supported, and is very active, just can't and won't sit up. Anyone else have this problem or any advice?

My health visitor wants him to be seen by a phsiotherapist.

Thanks!

that does sound a little strange to be honest. Will he sit supported?
It obviously isn't a strength issue if he can stand, but I would definitely get it checked out. perhaps there is something that hurts him when he is in that position?
Tbh I'd be more inclined to see a paediatrician to start with rather than a physio

CarlyP · 09/08/2006 14:36

i think a paediatrician aswell. i would be concerned. 4mths is v v early to crawl, but 8mths is v v late not to be sitting. let us knwo how you go.

Thanks for the messages. He can sit if he is supported but he just doesn't want to do it for more than a second or two (doesn't seem to be in any pain tho). Staying still is not his thing! When unsupported he just flops to the side, turns over and crawls off at great speed!

The health Visitor thinks it is v strange that he can't sit but is so active in all other areas, so that's why she's getting him to the physio.

hmm well then it may be that he CAN sit, he just doesn't want to.
I would still see a paed first though, because if there is an underlying reason it may not be a muscular thing iyswim? there may be another reason for it and as such it'd be no good just seeing a physio

my son didn't sit up totally unaided for more than a couple of seconds until 8 months on the dot. (it said between 5-8months in my developmental book). I had no idea that it was unusual (thank god I didn't read mumsnet then). It was also around that time he started pulling himself up and crawled properly (he had been doing it on his stomach since 6 months). Good luck with seeing someone about it.

lazycow · 09/08/2006 15:18

Ds didn't sit up unsupported util he was almost 9 months old. He did do a commando crawl, sort of dragging his belly along the floor at 8 months. As soon as he could sit up unsupported by 9 months he started crawling normally. He did roll and move around a lot from 4/5 months old though - just had trouble sitting up without help.

tbh - I never thought it was a problem though if it had gone on much longer I probably would have asked a doctor/nurse about it.

I do remember going to the swimming pool and watching mothers put their 6-8month old babies to sit down by the pool. I couldn't do that for ds as he would have fallen and hurt his head. Bathing was a real pqin too ad he had to supported in the water foo ages or else he fell in. Weird thing is on the thread about useless objects bought for babies - baby bath is high on the list of don't buy for most people. For me it was pretty much essential to save my back

alex8 · 09/08/2006 15:20

me too! Mine was one of those ones that sat on the side of the bath we used it for 10 months. Less back breaking

eclipse · 09/08/2006 20:54

If he is able to stand supported and crawl it is unlikely to be anything majorly wrong because muscle groups top and bottom seem to be working well and in a coordinated fashion. Probably a personal preference of his. There's no harm in getting him checked but my ds didn't sit until 8 months but could stand and run with a hand to hold. Lots at my babygroups also seemed only to master sitting at around that time.

FrayedKnot · 09/08/2006 21:00

DS was a bit like this! he could crawl as fast as bu**ery by 8 months, so he would crawl to teh nearest hard surface (e.g. brick fireplace), sit, and promptly fall into it, cracking his head as he went.

I used to see other Mums sitting their fairly immobile babies up and they would stay sitting there playing with toys until moved somewhere else.

While DS rampaged around the room destroying everything and himself, in his wake!

I think I would maybe wait another couple of weeks, they change so much at this age.

sweetkitty · 09/08/2006 21:09

DD1 never sat unaided until about 10 months, she never rolled until 7 months, commando crawled at 8 1/2 months, started proper crawling at 11 months, got up and walked at 12 months. I think she could sit up she just didn't want to.

To be honest why would you want to sit still if you can crawl and get at everything? I think he sounds absolutely fine if he's not sitting at a year then I would be worried.

Reece · 09/08/2006 21:34

DS2 sat up at 8-9 months. Crawled at 10 and starting walking last week. He is 17 months now.

RSF · 10/08/2006 12:38

Thanks for all the messages - I feel better now

Well...better get off and stop DS from destroying any more of the furniture.

My DS was crawling, even pulling himself to standing before sitting up.
I figured he'd rather be dashing off crawling around than sitting still..so just didn't boher trying..lol

waterfalls · 10/08/2006 13:11

My dt2 never sat up til she was 15 months, even though she could crawl and walk round furniture.
