I've never really understood how you can tell when a baby is teething- ds nevr drooled, went red etc. However ds was grumpy, sucky and generally cried a lot from about 31/2 months onwards (He was a fairly average newborn I think). Dh was convinced he was teething (I just thought he was grumpy ) - but he got his first tooth at about 5 months I believe and his crying/grumpiness/sucking did improve a bit - though not much until he hit about 12 months - I am now convinced he just didn't like being a baby - he seems to ewnjoy toddlerhood so much more and is exhuberantly joyful a lot of the time.

I would use the teething excuse to fend off the early weaning brigade though - she may well be teething even if she isn't they won't know that

Can tell when my little man is teething cos he does his high pitched in pain scream, and even stops playing to hit himslef in mouth and whine..

I'd go with teething to ward em off, but I was told that it is just them finding their hands properly for the first time (ie realising them belong to THEM) and finding out what they do

How about "I've discovered my hands and want to shove them in my mouth as far as possible to see what it feels like" and "oh, not great" so hence the grumpy??? Also, how 'bout the "I'm just about to do something new and I'm a bit grumpy cos I havent mastered it yet and I'm frustrated"????? Otherwise teething seems a good one. Is she feeding or wanting to feed more than normal to suggest the hunger route???
