Hates being on tummy...

hello, I feel pretty silly posting this actually as Im not up for being a pushy mum! But so many books talk about baby rolling from back to tummy (and all over the shop) and my DS (21 weeks) hates being on his tummy... would be good to hear that other wee ones are the same. I'm thinking the best thing is to just ditch the books eh. Afterall, I know that all babies develop at different rates and like doing different things. See I'm answering my own question, no wonder I was feeling silly...

DD (10.5 months) still has no inclination to roll and is not impressed at being on her tummy.

DS rolled at about 5 months I think and then crawled at 8 months. I quite like the immobile DD .

My DD hated being on her tummy. I tried a few times cos the books said I should, but soon decided it wasn't worth the stress!! She sat up unsupported at 5.5 months, and started crawling just before 9 months - she learnt by leaning forward from a seated position and pushing herself up onto all fours.

DS has only started rolling now he can crawl and he started crawling at about 10.5 months. He hated being on his tummy (still doesn't go there by choice unless sleeping) despite attempts at waving thrilling toys at him etc.

He never rolled tummy to back until after mastering crawling...and only rolled from back to tummy once or twice..

Now he rolls whenever he is having his nappy changed (gggggrrrrrrr!!!) such fun!!

Ditch the books ... you'll feel much more confident in your own parenting if you're not trying to squeeze him into someone else's idea of what he's meant to be doing! Dd was rolling all over the shop at 11 weeks; her friend didn't roll until she was 10 months old - they're both perfectly fit and healthy 5 year olds now, so it really made no difference at all in the long run.

They are all different, he'll do it when he's good and ready to do it.

My DS 13 months rolled over (back to tummy) LAST WEEK. cant do tummy to back and still doesn't crawl. Nearly walking tho. Everyone says don't worry but it is worrying isn't it when your DC is so far behind the books and all the other children around

yeah ditch the books! Tis precisely what my DH says and I know it, it's just sometimes easier said than done. He's such a happy boy, and has been keen to be up right and looking around at everything from about 7 or so weeks...not anything to worry about so guess I just fixated on it a bit. thanks though guys. I guess I just needed to hear it from other mums and you've made me ;) and realize that we all get there in the end. Walking, talking, the whole sha-bang. DH was a late walker afterall and has since run two marathons... The main thing is to have more confidence in ones own ability!! xx

one more thing. Alexh - as you kindly responded to me - I will also say don't worry about what the other babies are doing either... I bet your DS can do things other babies can't which are mighty more charming than rolling

Just echoing everyone else. Both mine hated being on their tummy. Slower to roll than others but very average age for walking. Don't worry.

Marne · 07/08/2006 14:48

DD1 hated being on her tummy and did'nt roll until she was 6 months

DD2 4.3 months is rolling on the floor as i type and spends most of the day on her tummy.

mumfor1standfinaltime · 07/08/2006 14:53

Ds wasn't keen on 'tummy time' either! He would get so frustrated. He prefered to sit up, he could sit unsupported from 6 months.

I did the 'tummy time bits' when he was on his change mat in the evenings (when undressing ready for bath etc)and made a short game of it, he seemed to enjoy that, but then he did love his change mat anyway! I don't see it as important mile stone, some babies just like to be the other way round!

daystroller · 14/08/2006 08:49

DS started rolling day after i posted message. that will teach me to fret!

DS hated being on his tummy and I worried too, didn't stop him crawling and walking though. He was a big baby and prefered to sit.
