2 weeks of diarrhea/secondary lactose intolerance? Help!!

Hello everyone,
First time on here so I'm hoping for lots of lovely words of wisdom from you lovely people. My 9.5 month old DD has had 2 weeks of diarrhea. At the end of last week my HV suggested trying soya milk for 24hrs as she may have secondary lactose intolerance. We did this... and then the rain of poo (too much?!) came back with a vengence. She's back on soya now and I'm taking her to the dr's tomorrow. Anyone else been through this? How long did it last? Anything else we can do to help her?!

Many thanks!

We have a lactose intolerance here. My DS is 6.5m and after being on nutramigen for several months we've started weaning. It's actually not too hard to avoid lactose in foods, Ocado does a really good range and the lactofree products taste pretty close to the real thing.

We're currently working on reintroducing dairy with the dietician - you're next step is probably getting yourself a referral but it's not essential.

And as I'm sure you've heard before - most children grow out of these thugs by the time they're five.

Good luck Smile

Your, not you're!

  • we've got fingers crossed that this is just a temporary thing, but thank you for the top tips (helps to have the thought of a referral in mind when I see the doctor - just in case it's necessary).

my dd had this. i think it was recommended she go lactose free (by gp) for 2 weeks but i did it for longer because dd caught another bug and i worried that her body wouldnt have repaired itself. i also used sma gold lactose free instead of soya. she was fine after this. there is obv a big difference here in the medical advice we were both given. id say that 2 weeks was maybe excessive and 24hours far too short. i went to gp as hv dismissed it as teething even though we were getting up to 10 dirty nappies a day which would look like wet ones had the gel stuff not been brown - it was that watery! oh the smell was a pretty good indicator too Wink

i feel your pain with the rain of shit though. it was really difficult to deal with when dd was of the ihatenappychanges age like your dc is too.

good luck i hope your dc recovers soon

Yes my dd2 had lactose intolerance after norovirus. Changing formula to LF didn't agree with her so I added Colief to her milk and that stopped the runs. I'm a GP and we give Colief as a treatment for lactose intolerance as it works by breaking down the lactose (which is how it benefits colic too). It is hideously expensive though and a tiny dropper bottle lasts less than a week, so you need to ask your GP for it on prescription. Dd2's lactose intolerance lasted about 6 weeks. I intermittently tried the odd feed without the Colief in it, and only stopped using the Colief once that didn't induce runny nappies. It usually lasts anything from a week to a couple of months. I too can sympathise - we got through 4 outfits a day or more, and the house constantly stank of poo until we started the Colief!

Thanks for the responses. Always nice to know you're not the only one going through/has been through something!

Dr checked my DD this morning. She's pretty chirpy considering - though GP did say that her stomach was very noisy and I'm guessing this is not a good thing.
He actually suggested that it will run it's course and to feed her whatever she wants and what we give to her to drink is up to us. We're staying on soya until we start getting some 'normal' poo and then I'll try reintroducing her normal milk. If it doesn't work I'll go back and see if we can get than Colief on prescription.
Many thanks
Rosie

Oh yeah - and you are bang on, lumpolead, changing her bum whilst she wriggles and kicks is quite simply a joy at the moment! Heals AND hands in it this morning. Lovely. Wink

My DD had this a few times when she was little. We stuck to a lactose free diet each time and it did the trick.

It's surprising how many foods lactose is in- I had to scrutinise labels very carefully. She had some gravy on a roast one time and was violently sick after. Looking closely at the very small print on the label we noticed lactose was one of the ingredients.

She is now 15 and does not have lactose intolerance ( guzzles milk) so it was definitely temporary.

ah yes i remember it well! i recall at the end of a long day when dd had just done another watery one right after id zipped up a ridiculously awkward onsie and it was such a battle. i stupidly gave up before wrestling her new nappy back on and let her stand at the telly bare arsed watching in the night garden. i didnt think there could possibly me anything left until whole grapes started flying out her bum cheeks. i had told dp not to give her any fruit while she was like that Angry

anyway, good luck itll all be over soon and it will just be a horrendous memory Grin
