Children that shuffle on their bottoms! Please post me if yours did!

Hello! My little one shuffled on his bottom from the age of 16 months to 22 months when he eventually decided to walk!
He now zooms around like any other child.
I have become very interested in this subject and I am trying to gage statistics on how many children shuffle on their bottoms and wondered if anyone could post me if their child did this or not and for how long and at what age?
I would be hugely grateful. Thank you.

Both of mine did (as did their Dad according to MIL)

DS1 started around 11 months and walked at 15 months. DS2 started to crawl normally at 9 months but at 10 months decided bum shuffling was quicker and developed a hybrid style that looked like a baby chimp! It was short-lived as he was walking by 1.

deakymom · 24/01/2014 23:05

mine bum shuffled then he crawled because it was faster he is now walking around the furniture and getting into everything i found it cute as i never had a bum shuffler before he hated tummy time too perhaps that is why he never crawled?

globetrotter141 · 25/01/2014 08:19

My ds was a bumshuffler from about 10 months to when he started walking at 17 months. Only learnt to crawl after he could walk. Also hated tummy time as a baby. I was a bum shuffler too!

My sister was a bum shuffler, didn't take a step until she was two. My mum had visions of her shuffling into school. She was so efficient at it she didn't see the point of walking.

hazeyjane · 25/01/2014 08:33

Dd2 a bumshuffler, crawled after she walked at 22 months. Had hypermobile ankles.

Used to have to put big denim and corduroy patches on the bottom of all her trousers.

GossamerHailfilter · 25/01/2014 08:38

DD started at about 10 months and never crawled. Started walking at 17 months and gradually stopped bum shuffling by 20 months.

She was super fast at it - could cross the room in a few seconds.

Metebelis3 · 25/01/2014 08:40

I did. So did both my DDs. We are all dyspraxic. Apparently there's a link.

cosikitty · 25/01/2014 08:53

My dd never crawled, she started bum shuffling at about 8 months and didn't walk until she was 16 months. I think she didn't need to walk, because she could shuffle and carry things at the same time. She remains quite an uncordinated child though, and has always been late at developing skills which require her arms and legs to be synchronized, like skipping, running, ball skillls and swimming.

Theas18 · 25/01/2014 08:58

Interesting re dyspraxia. I expect the eldest is.

She's rubbish at ball games, runs interestingly and didn't ride a bike till she was 10

AngelinaCongleton · 25/01/2014 09:00

Dd1 17 months, dd2 16 months.

ThreeBeeOneGee · 25/01/2014 09:01

2 of my 4 did this.

Now that they are 13, 11, 9 and 9, you cannot tell which two it was. Smile

So no long-term consequences.

ThreeBeeOneGee · 25/01/2014 09:02

But interestingly, they were the two latest to walk (22m and 24m).

The crawlers started walking at 15m and 19m.

Dd was an early & very effective roller .... She would roll from room to room. Never crawled or cruised but bum shuffled from about a year old very speedy she was too!! Literally one day at about 16.5 months she just stood up & walked & was very steady on her feet straight away.

mummytowillow · 25/01/2014 22:30

My DD did, she never crawled or pulled herself up. It was funny to see and she had a really dry patch of skin on her leg from doing it.

She just got up at 18 months and walked, she was so chuffed with herself!

Nancyclancy · 25/01/2014 23:56

My dd bum shuffled first, then learnt to crawl but often reverted back to shuffling. She walked at 27 months. She's a little behind her peers physically (she's now 32 months.) But is catching up fast!

my DS bottom shuffled from 9mo to 16mo when he started walking. No crawling at all. He is my only LO at present so it seemed relatively normal to me.

Worriedthistimearound · 30/01/2014 20:03

None of mine bum shuffled but one is dyspraxic and there is a link apparently as we were asked it at diagnosis. Also linked to dyslexia in some cases they said although of course many bum shufflers will be neither dyspraxia or dyslexic. Genetics is bizarre!

GingerDoodle · 02/02/2014 13:36

My DD bum shuffle / leap-frogged from 10.5 months, cruised the day after her first birthday and walked around 14 months. She went from 2 steps to independent walking within 3 weeks.

SandyChick · 02/02/2014 13:40

My youngest son bum shuffled from around 9 10 months then walked at 15 months. He never crawled on all 4's.

My oldest son crawled on all 4's and was walking 1 week after his 1st birthday.

lemontop · 02/02/2014 14:08

Yes my daughter did. I can't remember when she started, maybe 11 months? She learned to crawl a week before she started walking at almost 15 months. I loved her shuffling. She did it randomly the other day at 18m.

stopgap · 04/02/2014 03:58

Mine bum-shuffled at 10 months and started walking at 16 months. He's now 2.5 and still not brilliant at climbing etc. and he can't jump, but by goodness he can run like the wind!

HappySeven · 04/02/2014 20:25

My DD bottom-shuffled from 11 months till 17 months when she started to walk. I was a bottom-shuffler too. I reckon there's less incentive to walk as you can carry things with you unlike with crawling and see what's going on around you more easily. I was told that crawling was an important skill to do with coordination but neither of us seem to have a problem.

TinyTwoTears · 04/02/2014 20:32

Ds1 was a bum shuffler. Can't remember when he started but walked at 2 years old. Was really quite bendy and had piedro boots to give his ankles support.
Very very cute. Smile

asandwichshort · 04/02/2014 20:36

1st crawled at 7 months and walked and climbed up onto kitchen table at 10 months - 2nd bum shuffled from 9 months never crawled and walked at 13 months . 3rd crawled at 6 months and walked at 11 months. All different!
My theory on bum shufflers is that as their eye line is straight ahead they don't need to be upright whereas crawlers have to keep lifting their heads up to see where they are going so walking is preferable!
