What's the absolute earliest age a baby might roll over?

I KNOW they say never never NEVER leave them on the change table but she's 3 weeks old. I have once or twice risked it while I dart across the room to grab something. When do I need to start strapping her down?

I think some people might say never leave the baby unattended on a changing table from birth but our DD is 18 weeks old and it is only in the last couple of weeks that we have been worried about leaving her on the changing table. What we do now is just plonk her in the middle of our bed if we need to pop away or a second ( or 2 for a wee) Wink. We just started to recognise that she is starting to get on her side so is close to Rolling over soon. All babies progress at different rates so just keep an eye out for the signs.

My ds did actual rolling at 8 weeks! I was surprised as I didn't know anyone else's baby that was doing it. He could also wriggle sideways and round in a circle from a bit smaller. I never left him on a high change surface ever as he was so bloomin wriggly. They have a habit of surprising you - and you wouldn't want the first time she rolls to be on the changing unit when you've just stepped out of reach.

ZingSweetApple · 20/01/2014 19:24

DD managed to roll/slide off the sofa at 3 weeks.

I was shocked. I thought she was safe.
and I'm not easily shocked - she is my 6th and I'm very careful generally!
so my advice is don't leave baby on the changing mat at any height.

put the mat on the floor so no danger of falling off.

(btw she was fine. she is now 21 months and still a live wire. I call her Miss Houdini!Grin )

CouthyMow · 20/01/2014 19:36

I would have said 12 weeks, but my DC2 was just 5 weeks old. (He walked at 7mo, before he even had depth perception!)

After a stressful hospital visit because I would have never believed a baby that young could roll off a bed, my answer would be to NEVER leave a baby unattended on a surface that is higher than the floor, no matter HOW young!!

CouthyMow · 20/01/2014 19:38

And yes, it WAS proper rolling, it was witnessed in the hospital by the doctor just as he was about yo contact SS as he didn't believe me...

He was rolling around the room, getting stuck under furniture by 7 weeks old!

DS1 rolled to his side from birth (no point even trying to get him to sleep on his back). DS2 can't roll, but had enough of a kick and stretch to get himself out of his baby bouncer or off the settee from about a month

CuriosityCola · 20/01/2014 19:41

It's less the rolling, more the wiggling I was worried about. My ds was rolling properly by 3 months. On the move just after that. Have never been able to place him down anywhere (sigh).

Much safer to place on the floor!

TheTertiumSquid · 20/01/2014 19:43

My ds actually rolled, 3 times in a row, at 5 weeks. We were so surprised that we managed to film the 3rd one!

happydutchmummy · 20/01/2014 19:45

My ds is now 10 weeks and I occasionally find him lying on his belly, when I always put him to sleep on his back. I've never actually seen him roll but he must be doing something to end up facing the other way...

BikeRunSki · 20/01/2014 19:47

Ds did actual, deliberately, 360 degree rolling at 9 weeks.

Goldmandra · 20/01/2014 21:27

DD1 rolled from front to back several times from three weeks old. I don't think it was deliberate, just a result of her pushing her arms out as she lifted her head, but that doesn't matter when it comes to safety.

Just don't ever leave your baby where he or she can fall, as the advice says. I could easily have been caught out as nobody in their right minds expects it to happen at that age.

ditsydoll · 20/01/2014 21:30

Dd took ages to roll and ds rolled from birth (only onto his side but managed a proper roll a few weeks after) not worth the risk IMO

lougle · 20/01/2014 21:34

DD1 would not sleep on her back and from day 2 was able to lift her legs and catapult herself onto her side. Pretty impressive for a baby that actually had a brain malformation and couldn't walk until 23 months Grin

SaltyGoodness · 20/01/2014 23:28

Really interesting, thanks. Will not be taking any risks now based on some of your experiences!! Her change mat is in the middle of a 4 foot wide chest of drawers so in theory there's room to roll either way, but its so high up I dread the thought of her falling off it.
