When did your DC drop the bedtime milk?

DS will be three in April. Bottles gone, and he's not really interested in milk from a cup.

He sleeps fine (7-7) so I'm assuming he's naturally ready to drop the bedtime milk. I'm not fussed if he does this, just wondering at what age your DC ditched the milk before bedtime?

(Now I've written this out I feel like he's already way too old to be having milk at bedtime Hmm )

Ds moved from bottle to beaker with a lid to open cup and gave up his bedtime milk about 3 weeks ago. He is5.4.

My ten year old still has warm milk or hot chocolate while I read him a story.
Not from a bottle though :-)

my2bundles · 21/01/2014 20:57

My teen still has milk before bed. My youngest stopped at 9 months then started again at age 2, now age 6 he still has milk before bed. There is no right age to stop and there is no age you need to stop.

Are they potty trained? I stopped letting my girl drink before or in bed when she came out of nappies

sparkleshine · 23/01/2014 10:53

My DS stopped/refused his bottles by 13 months. Started with a cup instead and at 4 he still has a cup most nights unless we are out. Either way it's his choice

DC1: only gave up the warm milk in a cup before bed a couple of months ago, at 4.5, when there had been some peeing the bed incidents. Mightily unhappy about it, and still asks on occasion.

DC2: stopped a couple of months ago at same time as eldest, at 2.9. But only ever half-heartedly sipped it anyway, and really couldn't care less.

DD B-F till 23 months then stopped. Sh it. She does drink a tiny amount of cows milk about twice a week, steamed using the milk frother on our coffee machine but has never been interested in drinking it cold or warm or in any other way but steamed - she first tried it off my coffee on a spoon, and decided she quite liked it but she only "eats" the foam even if given her own small cupful, and doesnt drink any warm milk that's underneath so I only do it for her when she asks for it- which is always in the mornings at weekends when she sees me steaming milk for my coffee!

Sorry about the weird typo! Looks ike I swore there, but it was not intentional!

SukiTakeItOffAgain · 23/01/2014 13:09

I'm 36 and have to have milk at bedtime even if I'm pissed. I didn't know I was supposed to have dropped it!

gourd · 23/01/2014 13:33

I dont have it every night but I do like a mug of cocoa (which is essentially the same thing as warm milk) before bed. I'm not sure it contributes greatly to needing to pee in the night though. I often dont have it and still need to get up to use the toilet! Child always has a few sips of water literally seconds before we tuck her into bed, but cant say we've noticed that it makes any difference to whether or not she needs to pee in the night. She always has a drink of water before bed but usually sleeps through - once or twice a week she does get up around 4am to use the toilet (she's 3 Years and 4 months) but doesnt drink more before bed on those nights as far as we are aware.

Laurenmarie21 · 24/01/2014 12:10

Adults are different when it comes to peeing I the night particularly adults who have given birth; no matter how many pelvic floor exercises you do it will always be weakened!
I don't deny her a few sips but a whole cup before bed and she'd be up in the night, particularly with younger children who haven't been dry for long as their bladder control is sill a tad on the rocks and there's never a 100% chance they will wake to pee

madamginger · 24/01/2014 12:21

My 3,5 and 7 year old still have milk at bedtime. The 7 year old doesn't always finish hers but the other 2 would cause a mutiny if milk wasn't forthcoming at bedtime!

Thanks for all the responses. DAS now appears to have totally dropped milk. Won't even have a sip out of a cup during the day. My dad tried giving him a bottle before bed the other evening and he wasn't interested in the slightest. I'm quite sad about it - he's just ditched his dummies too. get a fucking grip woman

HAHAHAHAHA you mean they are supposed to stop bedtime milk??

I don't think my 20/18/14 yr olds would agree. They all have bedtime milk, The youngest still has hers warm too but at least she can do it herself LOL

Kids do need plenty of calcium to reach peak bone mass when they are growing and so help stave off osteoporosis as old people..

(It's one of the "university food parcel" essentials- 12L of UHT milk!)

rallytog1 · 24/01/2014 17:09

I thought everyone had bedtime milk! 35 and still having mine without fail every night.

Kiwiinkits · 29/01/2014 21:15

DD1 dropped it at around 2; DD2 dropped it at 1.5. They get lots of cheese and yoghurt and milk on their cereal. It's enough.

MiaSparrow · 30/01/2014 09:58

DD's three next month and we've recently gone over to giving her a small mug of hot milk at bedtime (as opposed to a sippy cup). We do still give her a sleepy wee on the potty at around 11, before we go to bed - just to make sure she doesn't wake needing the loo. I can't imagine her going to bed without milk for a while!
