How many words should a 20 month old be saying

Hi everyone.

I know every child is different, but, lo, 20 months doesn't say much.

mummy, dadda, out, yer, woof, Dolshi (which is the dog),

She babbles Abit and 'sings' into a microphone but that's about it really..

She understands everything well and can get her point across and we know what she wants.

She has melt downs and screams but is happy.

we go to playgroups, days out, she has alot of adults around her who talk to her loads.

We dance, swim, laugh, play, paint, draw

But I just don't think she is saying much at all.

How many words can your 20 month old say?

Anyone got any good ways to encourage speech in a fun way?

Thank you

Hmmm. Mine has meow (cat), moo (cow), bow wow (dog), twinkle (star), go, poo, ew (!), no, please, owl (random), baby, duck and shoes. She also knows two baby signs.

Not that many but I don't know how many she is supposed to have. We read a lot of books and point and say 'what's that?'

Sounds fine. Some kids will be talking away some only have the odd single word both is normal. You will probably find in the next few months it all kicks off. 50 words at 24 months is considered a bench mark for some speech and language therapy authorities.

Ds is 19 months and can say buh byeee, dah (star), car, jeeeews (juice) and when he fancies it he will shake his head for no. But no mummy or daddy or much else!!

We go on lots of walks and point things out to him constantly and if we are at home we just talk to him and repeat things non stop.

Hopefully he will get there eventually! Dd was the same and she doesn't stop talking now she is 11 :)

The Talkingpoint website is quite helpful

DS1 is 19 months and can say the following (not perfect pronunciation by any means, but we understand him) although he doesn't use them all the time at all - choose to point and gesture a lot:

dada, cat, car, cup, bus, paper, book, guitar, pie, bye, water, socks, shoes, bubbles, ear, nose, hair, ball, cards, chair, meow (actually, a very good cat impression!), quack, duck, baa (sheep!), mouse, alligator (!), teeth, bear, fish, down, up, hat, knee, cot, ta, ow (when he's hitting me!), taid (welsh for Grandad), two, ten (doesn't know what the numbers mean though), that, neigh (horse).

It's funny but I didn't actually think he had many words until I just wrote that list!

Still waiting for mummy or mama though...Sad

hello!
my (almost) 20 month old can only say a few words, and even then these words are not particularly clear and he tends not to say the ends of them. he's prob only got about 6 or 7 words at the mo. there's no way he's going to have 50 by 24 months! In terms of communication, its more important at this stage that they have mastered the non-verbals e.g. pointing, gesturing and eye contact...have you any concerns over this?

I know everyone tells you not to worry or compare but it is very difficult!

daisydee43 · 19/01/2014 20:53

My 20 month old says yes please, dad, ball, ot oh, erm then just points or signals - shakes empty bottle/walks to cot or highchair - her friend is one month older and counts to 10!

Liara · 19/01/2014 21:58

Ds1 said exactly one word at 20 months, and indeed 24 months.

He is now a very, very verbal 7yo with a large vocabulary.

Ds2 was talking pretty fluently by 20 months.

Your dd sounds fine, she will talk more when she's ready to.

Such a vast range of normal. Dd for example spoke fluently at 20 months whereas ds only managed 2-3 word sentences and my niece had 3 single words. All normal, all talk non stop now.

RubyGoat · 19/01/2014 22:55

DD is 20.5 months. She can say

Mama, Dada, cat, dog, duck, ball, bye, night-night, bed, pig, go, no, yes, milk, yum, thankyou, please, cake, banana, apple, orange, pear, star, spoon, horse, up, down, doll, Iggle & Daisy (as in Iggle Piggle & Upsy Daisy), dinosaur, bee, one, two, three, four, bag, bubble, jump, dance, stairs, cow, kiss, stuck, sheep, hat, bird, car, book, gone, oh dear, door, snake, tree, sock, shoe, teddy, bear, eye, good-bye, baby.

I think that's it. Some of them aren't pronounced perfectly yet though. She also signs quite a few of them as she only started talking properly a few weeks ago & we encouraged signing so she could communicate with us & avoid her absolutely epic tantrums. It did help, a lot, tantrums disappeared almost overnight. There are also a few things she can sign but can't say.

MissPryde · 19/01/2014 23:03

She sounds perfectly fine! All babies go at different rates, the amount of words she has is well within normal range. In the next months she'll gain so many words you'll realize you never needed to worry. This is such a wonderful time, watching them learn and grow is fantastic, enjoy it, don't worry about comparing her milestones to others, enjoy them as they come.

Thanks for the link to that website, BackForGood, some good advice on there.
