Did my 21.5mo just count to six???

We were putting his toy eggs away in their box. We counted one, two, three, which I know he can do (although I'm not sure he knows what it means), then I stopped counting and he kept going!

I tried it a second time but he was into something else by then, so it wasn't as clear, but he definitely sounded like he was saying four, five, six in the right order.

Is this even possible? Does anyone know when children develop an understanding of numbers? I would say his verbal ability is generally good, but not out of the ordinary for his age.

Sorry if this sounds like a boast - that's not my intention. I'm just surprised and hoping someone can enlighten me!

DD was around 3.5 when she started counting rather than reciting (I think)...

HoratiaDrelincourt · 18/01/2014 16:56

DS2 was definitely reciting numbers at that point.

A year later he still hasn't quite got that each word counts a separate object.

I think he must have just been reciting. No idea where he learned it though!

My son is 21 months and does this, 'counting' toys etc. I think he only grasps one to three as concepts, though, and just likes the sound of 'six, seven'!

My DD could do to ten, but more reciting in order than counting per say. They do pick things up in odd places. She got a new toy at Christmas that plays the alphabet song and the first time she pressed it she sang along to the 'hijklmnop' bit. Lord only.knows where she picked that up!

DS2 is 20 months and recites to 8 then repeats 7,8,7,8 till whatever it is he's counting runs out. He definitely understands what 2 is as he was trying to take DD's biscuit and when I said "you have one" he replied with "want two". I think it's pretty normal from what I can remember with his older siblings but I can't specifically recall when they started doing these things Blush
I recorded things like first steps and teeth falling out, I have no idea why I didn't write every thing down!

My DS has just turned 2. He counts to 10 and will count out say 10 grapes or two ears etc.

Slebmum · 19/01/2014 15:06

DTs could do this, they learnt it from Peppa Pig but it's reciting, not counting. They're counting now at 2.5 to ten.

PeazlyPops · 20/01/2014 21:57

DS is 20 months and has been reciting 1-20 for a few months, but can only count 1-3
