3 week old vomiting after formula feeds - help!

Hi
I have recently switched from bf to ff and my DD has been vomiting (like projectile vomiting) after feeding. Three times on Thursday twice on Friday and twice so far today (and it's not even midday!)
Any ideas what might cause this?
We are using Cow & Gate formula for newborns and the Tommee Tippee slow flow bottles size 1.

Any help greatly appreciated!

It could be something like a cow's milk protein allergy - did she vomit immediately afterwards or was there a delay? Was she prone to sickness before she had formula?

Are you able to continue breastfeeding?

Try to take a video on your phone and show your HV at clinic? Or take to GP? Could simply be reflux where some babies struggle to keep milk down, or could be something else....i am not a medic you should get it checked out.

If it is reflux they make special milk which is supposed to stay down better. Your HV could advise you on this. Some babies are just sicky. But make sure you get her weighed every week to check she is gaining weight well

How come you're switching?

It could be an allergy or intolerance. Try no formula and feed expressed milk from a bottle.

Are you making her finish a bottle? You could be over feeding.

Try the ready made cartons of formula. If your child has milk protein allergy then they may be ok depending on how severe it is. The ready made cartons are heat treated and therefore the protein is broken down and they shouldn't vomit.

My dd was like this but could drinks the ready made cartons ok. We gave her aptamil as cartons readily available. I wouldn't worry about it being bad for her tummy to swap formula and to try the cartons. Believe me it could save you a lot of trouble in the future.

It took is 5 months of vomiting before dietician suggested this and it was life saving. My son was only given cartons so never had the problem.

It is honestly worth doing.

If she's projectile vomiting at 3 weeks I would make an urgent trip to the GP. It could be CMP allergy but it could have nothing to do with the formula and be pyloric stenosis www.patient.co.uk/health/pyloric-stenosis

Could you be over feeding? This happened to my dd, but she was 6 months old. I only realised I was over feeding in retrospect. I'm not an expert though and would talk to a gp.

My DSIL used to do this. Allergy.

Mummydoo99 · 18/01/2014 18:45

Thanks for all the advice!
We tried the Aptimil StaceyB and so far it has stayed down!
I've left a message for HV and will get her weighed as suggested -thanks BotBotticelli

Swapping as I just couldn't take it anymore. (Hypothyroid and had problems with milk supply plus blistered cracked nipples that were bleeding)

Will also see GP on Monday. She is producing lots of wet nappies so is not dehydrated.

Thanks again all, don't know how new Mums coped before Mumsnet!!

Hope it's still staying down.

That's the same reason I gave up breast feeding. I found it really hard as first time mum to get anyone to believe me that it was a problem. I keep getting told it was a virus etc. it was wonderful when she stopped being sick and GP finally listened.

Be firm and if you think its an allergy then ask to be referred as she can have special formula on prescription that is much cheaper than aptamil cartons. It tastes horrific though so you have to get them started on it early.

It's a horrible time when you don't know how to make it better.

projectile vomiting like this can be Pyloric Stenosis as an earlier poster said. My son developed it at three weeks so keep an eye. Just also check for dehydration (fontanelle & dry nappies) as these are also signs. I hope your little one is better soon. My DS had surgery at 4 weeks & was for fine. Now a strapping 12 y/o !!

Mummydoo99 · 20/01/2014 17:18

Thanks
Secondwoman67 I will keep checking for that thanks for the heads up.

We changed formula, position and now feed at first cues the vomiting has decreased significantly. In the last 24 hours she has only twice brought up about 5 ml of ml at the end of a feed. So relieved the poor mite is finally keeping some food down.
Thanks again for all the advice it has really helped us both, I was beside myself!
