Mums of bottom shufflers: when did your child start walking?

My ds is 15 months and only started bottom shuffling this week. He has never crawled and I don't think he ever will now. For others in my position, how long was it before your child started walking?

Hmmm, so it looks as if there is huge variation and babies start walking between 3 and 9 months after starting bum shuffling. So I could have several months more of the bottom shuffling which only started 2 weeks ago! Not sure if that makes my life harder or easier, but I hope ds is walking by the time new baby arrives in February!

2 bottom shufflers. 1 walked at 17 months, 1 at 21 months.

Several pairs of trousers worn out in the meantime.

Neither ever crawled.

Nearly two, HV said well she's found a perfectly good way of gettin around, why reinvent the wheel. She'll go when shes good and ready

sleepysooz · 09/08/2006 12:53

I had a friend who's dd bottom shuffled till she was 2, but then she was stronger on her feet than my 2 year old that had been walking since he was 10 months old, I was mortified i'd lost my baby soooo young, just think, your're saving alot of money on shoes!

Good luck, keep taking the spinach (for arm muscles)

Another mum of bum shuffler. 3rd child - 19mth son only weightbearing from last month still won't take a step independently. Any tips to encourage him as my right arm about to drop off cos still having to carry him!!!

beatie · 11/09/2006 10:07

What timely thread. My dd2 is a bum-shuffler and rarely weightbears. She is about to turn one and has been shuffling for about a month.

lou33 · 11/09/2006 10:09

Apologies for hijacking this thread. Was going to start another one but seeing as you're all here already...

My little girl is 17 months old and has always been a bum shuffler. She started walking a couple of weeks ago after a few weeks of cruising. The problem I have is that she's now taking an interest in stairs but, because she's never crawled, she doesn't get how to go up or down safely on her hands and knees. If I didn't stop her, she'd just walk right off the edge of the top step.

I've tried and tried to get her to go up and down on hands and knees but she just won't...

Anyone managed to teach this to a bum shuffler? Or found another way round it?

All advice much appreciated.

Looking some reassurance as well - is it normal for a child to not walk at 19mths. Trying to keep myself calm but MIL on my case and tbh mind races sometimes and start to think could something be wrong. Sitting up from 6.5mths, good upper body strength, communicates well, no other issues at present except this delay in walking. This thread has been useful.

my eldest b a bottom shuffler, as he my first i thought nothing of it, each 2 thier own, he as it happens has dyspraxia, which along with other earlier indicators was picked up early, my feelings now r that if u have any real gut concerns, go talk it over with hv, my b once he started walking was always unsteady and would fall over a blade of grass, as i said go with ur feelings. my b no 2 a crawler, so fast and keeps me on my toes, best of luck

Posting in the middle of the night due to insomnia so this may never get read!

Both dd and ds bottom shuffled and both started walking exactly 6 weeks after their 2nd birthdays. We have a family history - me, my brother, my dad...

Ds has flat feet and has to wear heel cup insoles but dd is fine.

pregnabrain · 12/09/2006 14:15

I've heard it definitely runs in families.

mrmoo - it's likely to be completely normal that your little one isn't walking yet but, if you're at all worried about it, you could talk to your GP and see what he/she thinks.

It's really hard not to worry if your baby is late to reach a 'milestone' even if you try to be really cool about it all. I'm hoping I'll be less bothered by it all next time...

Pollux · 12/09/2006 15:36

My SIL's bum shuffler started walking at 16 months.

mrmoo · 12/09/2006 17:10

Thanks all, reassured that i'm prob doing right thing at the moment by not stressing out too much. Just have to grit my teeth when listening to the umpteenth "is he not walking yet?" !! Dh shuffler too as baby so there is a familial trait. Hv not concerned but ds for checkup in couple of month's time if still not on the move. He actually pushed (very slowly mind!)his walker toy across living room today - first time so progress still being made. This my first experience of a shuffler so thanks again

IdrisTheDragon · 12/09/2006 17:15

DD is basically a bottom shuffler - she does something part way between a shuffle and a crawl. She's 1 next week and has been shuffling for a few weeks and has just started to pull herself up against the sofa.

DS crawled at 8.5 months; everyone said he'd walk soon after that, but didn't walk until 15 months as he crawled so fast he didn't seem to see the point of walking.

So I'm not expecting DD to walk for a while (and tbh, hoping she won't walk for a while - this mobile baby is still takign time to adjust to )

belgo · 12/09/2006 17:22

Bottom shiffling from 9 months and now at 12 months can stand unaided and walk holding one hand. She still shows no sign of wanting to crawling, but walking wise is doing fine.

wheelsonthebus · 19/09/2006 17:25

dd was bottom shuffler, walked at 20.5 months.

Northy · 28/09/2007 01:34

My daughter is 17 months and has been a bottom shuffler since about 10 months. I too was a shuffler and did not walk until 16 months. My daughter can stand on her own and will walk while having one hand held. Both legs very stiff when walking but otherwise all developmnet normal. Just have concerns that there is such emphasis on the importance of crawling. My daughter has never crawled and dont think she ever will.

xXxamyxXx · 28/09/2007 01:38

ds walked at 14 months never crawled of shuffled just wormed along the floor wouldnt worr they do things on their schedule not a books

ghosty · 28/09/2007 06:05

DD bottom shuffled at 11 months and walked at 15.
I think they take longer to walk because they have their hands free when bum shuffling ... does that make sense?

cktwo · 28/09/2007 21:26

Just to echo an earlier post - DD1 bottom shuffled, never crawled. Started walking when she was well over 2 and has really poor coordination. She can't jump, hop, skip and I am waiting for an appointment with the Child Development Unit as I suspect Dyspraxia.

Now I have DD2 I can clearly see DD1 needs some help but when it's your first its so hard to see.

Get your HV to keep an eye on your little one if you have any worries.

tiredemma · 28/09/2007 21:27

17 months

juuule · 28/09/2007 21:43

2 bottom shufflers - 1 walked at 15m and the other 17m. Neither crawled.

francagoestohollywood · 28/09/2007 21:43
