Thumb sucking - do they grow out of it?

DD started sucking her thumb at 6 months and now at 13 months does it constantly. She always does it to get to sleep, to calm herself if upset but also will just do it while watching TV or listening to a story. I've heard it's not great for their teeth but does it matter with milk teeth? And has anyone had experience of this and their kid grew out of it at a young age? Can you encourage them to stop? Or does it not really matter? Don't want to make an issue of it if she might stop of her own accord in a few months.

Our DS grew out of it at 4.5yrs. We didn't try to stop him, but the dentist mentioned to him that it would push his front teeth out of line.

My lo is 2 years and now only sucks her thumb when over tired. She is self weening off it as she sucked it from when she was in me i have a 4d scan of her sucking her thumb. If she hasnt stopped by 3 years ive been told to use the stuff to stop them biting their nails to get her to stop.

It becomes a problem after about 8 yrs.
My DS1 took quite a while to kick the habit - finally got him to stop aged 9.

7yr old DS is still going strong. Somehow he's so good at it he can even talk beautifully with his thumb in Confused.
No speech problems at all.

I've tried bribes and the nasty chemically stuff on his thumb, but nothing really stops it. His dentist has spoken to him about it too. There has only been one night (over xmas break) when he didn't suck his thumb, he was so pleased he didn't do it all night. Maybe it will gradually tail off as he grows up.

I sucked my thumb at least until I went to uni. Never did me any harm!

Overreactionoftheweek · 17/01/2014 22:32

I always pop up on these threads - 32 year old thumb sucker here! My teeth are fine! But it's probably best to try and wean her off it just in case

cakewitch · 17/01/2014 22:33

Forgive my ignorance, but why would it be a problem? Does it affect teeth? DS sucks his for comfort when tired. hes 6. Should i be worried?

bigbuttons · 17/01/2014 22:40

My 8 year old still sucks her fingers. Teeth are being pushed out though!

Frenchsticker · 17/01/2014 22:41

Overreaction I had a couple of friends at uni who still sucked their thumbs, they finally grew out of it in their 30s so there's hope for you yet Smile

Thanks all for the replies, I'm going to try and stay relaxed about it and if she's still doing it in a year or two try to gently wean her off it. She's going through a bit of separation anxiety at the moment so maybe that's making he do it more?

My dd sucked her thumb til she was 7, the dentist insisted she stopped as teeth stick out. Managed it with an advent calendar a chic every day she didn't suck thumb! Grin Not v tooth friendly I know, but it worked.

feckawwf · 17/01/2014 22:46

No sorry I'm 33 and have tried all ways to stop Blush

tshirtsuntan · 17/01/2014 22:50

I still do it at 42 Blush

MegBusset · 17/01/2014 22:52

Ds2 stopped of his own accord about 6 months ago, unless he's ill. He's 4.9.

IceRocket · 17/01/2014 23:42

I was a thumb sucker, I was still sucking my thumb aged 9. Although I did only do it secretly by then as i was aware my friends might laugh. My dentist at the time recommended a brace, I'm not sure but I don't think my teeth were sticking out, I remember the dentist explaining that my thumb would push up the roof of my mouth & the front teeth forward. But I'm unsure whether this had started to happen. When I started wearing a brace at 9 and could not suck my thumb any more.

IceRocket · 17/01/2014 23:45

I'm 32 and its still tempting although the brace ruined it for me. I wonder if dummy suckers are still tempted years on?
