3month and boiled water

LO is BF at 7-8pm and put down, he often goes off well. But wakes @10pm, mostly he can be shh'd or patted back asleep at this time.

He gets an EBM/Formula daddy led dream feed at 11.30 / midnight. And drops off while being burped and goes back down with zero complaint.

LO then awakes at 1 or 2 hour regular intervals, at most 3. No matter what we try he refuses to go down onto his back again, at most settling for one sleep cycle. He will happily sleep on someone's chest for 5 hours though! But this is destroying backs, sleep patterns and possibly creating a SIDS risk. He won't even co sleep on his back.

We are NOT contemplating withholding feeds if he wakes after 3 hours from his last good feed. But he wakes at 2am for example does 1 suck and falls asleep, then screams if put asleep on his back, that's after the 20mins wait for a deeper sleep.

He's not hungry. We've tried many things and are considering trying this, is it something people have tried and works in this type of situation?

no I wouldnt give water as too much water can be dangerous for babies. have you tried a dummy?

MakeTeaNotWar · 17/01/2014 21:32

I wouldn't give water. How about a dummy?

Santabroughtmethis · 17/01/2014 21:34

No no to water. If he's thirsty then even if its one suck, then its better for him to have that.

murphy36 · 17/01/2014 21:39

Throws the dummy out, it's never worked. BF one suck every 20-45minutes all night just isn't practical. If not water would EBM OR formula be suitable, that way settling can at least be shared.

yes, the other milks would be ok

murphy36 · 17/01/2014 21:47

Only concern with using milk is it might put him off his next feed. Doctor has recommended water to help his gas and wind pain, but that's for during the day and between feeds only.

maybe he has reflux - sucking helps ease the pain and they dont like to lie on their backs

murphy36 · 17/01/2014 22:12

We tried some anti-reflux formula last thing and inclined the cot bed. Didn't help

he may need medication instead with every feed

murphy36 · 18/01/2014 07:37

I don't think he needs medication. A sip or two of milk or water seems a better plan to me

we're going to try infacol again for his wind.

the feber method of reducing formula powder in formula feeds or adding water after a bf seems sensible also. if after a week or so he's still waking its most likely not a comfort thing and he needs extra calories and isn't getting them in the day.

he doesn't ask for feeds in the day and when given is very distracted, encouraging him to take in more breast milk in the day sounds good.

guessing not many on here have tried?

we are trying yo load up our 4 month old in the day in the hope of better nights. so far it seems to be working.

I'd say adding water to feeds or after feeds is not a good idea until well after 6 months.

murphy36 · 19/01/2014 15:19

How are you increasing feeds poocatcher?

LO is BF at day and FF at night.

ilovepowerhoop · 19/01/2014 15:38

I agree that it is not a good idea to water down feeds or give too much water when the baby is only 3 months old.

murphy36 · 19/01/2014 17:26

Are you increasing frequency or volume? I sometimes think less often feeds 5 instead of 7 would mean 5 better quality, longer higher calorie BFs
