Toddler complaining of sore knees

My nearly 3yo has been complaining of a sore knee over the last month or two. I guessed it was because he'd scratched it and was looking for sympathy, you know how they do, and so we carried on the 'pretense': we'd kiss it better, that sort of thing.

Now, last night, he woke up crying twice and complained he's knees hurt him. I had to snuggle up in bed with him for him to go to sleep - he was that upset. Now, it could have been nightmares/too hot, or something else, that woke him up and he just complained about his knees to gain comforting cuddles. Or it could be that his knees really do hurt.

MIL had early onset arthritis (early 50s) so I'm a teensy, teensy bit concerned. It occurred to me also he might be experiencing growing pains - do growing pains even exist in toddlers??

Growing pains, yes they do.

Hope that helps :)

Oh thanks! Never heard of them in toddlers before. Should I give Calpol or something before bedtime do you think?

Yes, my DS suffered a lot with this. He still gets them occasionally now - he's 7. I used to give him ibuprofen as I was told it is slightly better than paracetamol as it is anti-inflammatory.

Go to your GP. Probably nothing but should be looked at, he should not be waking crying with pain, and be sure to explain that the complaints of soreness has been going on for a number of weeks.

Has he had soreness in any other joints especially his hips? Is he limping at all? Pain in the knees might also coming from his back or hips.

Not sure if this is the right place to post.

2.5yr old dd came home from nursery talking about 'girls have willy's inside' and other such comments. In no uncertain terms I have spoken to nursery asking has been talked about. She has a new brother so is aware of the difference between girls and boys. Turns out the toddlers who are potty training are taking an interest in their own and others' bodies. Which is only natural. But dd told me one particular member of staff told her the above. Her key worker or in fact none of the staff raised the fact that questions are being asked by her with me! I have had lots of little chats with her about no-one should touch you in that area unless it is a nappy change etc. I don't think anything untoward has happened, but she has been exposed to information that I wouldn't dream of a toddler knowing at this age, so she is thoroughly confused. I think much of this misinformation has come from carers so I have said I am totally unhappy with anything like this being discussed outside of our home. I also suggested they may want a policy so there are guidelines for staff and parents. The nursery seem deputy manager didn't seem to think it was much for concern whereas the owners are taking it seriously.

Am I totally overreacting? I know she'll pick things up from kids as she gets older by 2.5! Advice please.

LeBFG, how is your 3yo? My daughter is 21 months old and she has been having the same complaints for six weeks, I'm worried sick - I fear leukaemia or neuroblastoma... I am a hypochondriac, so I am scared to death. These complaints were frequent, but mild, but last night She woke up and started crying and said ouchie showing her knee. Blood work was fine when I tested her ten days after the beginning of symptoms, but we decided to have it redone tomorrow.

OP
As most said its probably nothing but it never hurts to get a professional opinion

When one of our GC was 34 yrs old - one leg pain, GC was checked by doc NHS and then took privately, all was good, thankfully.
