Don't know what he wants!

My ds is 22mo and doesn't sleep through regularly. Most nights he wakes for a bottle of milk. From about 17 months onwards he has had spells where he has slept through, but usually no more than a week at a time. The issue is that, and this is no exaggeration, for the past 4 months or so he's either been teething (now finished) or has had a cold, which means he regresses from sleeping through and all progress is lost. Back to square one. It's monumentally frustrating. He has also co slept a lot.

Because of his age we obviously have had enough. If he wants a drink we don't want to deny him this (I know people say they don't need a drink but, hell, I want a drink late at night sometimes), but we've decided enough is enough with the co sleeping. He will sleep happily in his own room, but prefers to be with us.

For the last three nights he's woken and asked for milk but when we've given it to him he's taken one swig, screamed really angrily (like we've done something wrong) and hurled the bottle - not usual behaviour. He's then screamed really angrily and nothing will make him stop. We don't quite understand what the problem is as he's asked for milk each time but when we offer it again he just screams no. We wondered if he's trying to angle being brought into our bed, but if we do he still screams - normally he'd go straight to sleep.

Any suggestions? When we put him back in his cot he's crying and unsettled for ages.

Could he be teething? Have you tried him with a teething gel before he has the bottle or a dose of ibruprofen before bed?

If you want a book, try the no cry sleep solution for toddlers and preschoolers. Your library might have a copy Smile
