DS won't get his haircut!! HELP!

Hi all,
Ds decided a few months ago that getting his haircut was like being tortured. Last time DH and I had to hold him down while my friend cut it!! IT was terrible and so distressing for all of us.

Now the time has come again.... his hair is very thick and grows fast. He's starting to look like a member of Oasis! He won't even let me trim his fringe. How do we deal with this? He used to behave so well.

We have tried distraction, bribery, anger.... HELP!

How old is he? We take ds(22months) to the hairdressers and take lots of stuff to distract him....books, sweets, juice and then just told the girl to do as much as she could til he freaked. Unfortunately, due to me not speaking Italian (we live in Italy) she shaved his head and he looked like he was in the army!! I cried.

A lot will tell you to cut it while he is asleep tho I have not tried this myself!

DS is 2.8 yrs old. He used to go to the barbers with DH and was absolutely fine. He's just flipped!!
I can't really see how I could cut his hair while he's sleeping. As a baby it wasn't a problem, but now he'd just wake up when I moved him to get the other side.

A party sounds like a great idea! And I think I'll buy clippers and try it myself too....

Fingers crossed!

M2T my DD is the same, she is 3 next week and won't let a hairdressser near her hair. She has never let one cut her hair. Luckily she does let me do it, and she has such a small amount of hair it doesn't grow fast anyway. It was funny last time we tried, she sat there, puleed the hood of her dress over her head and held it under her chin, there was nothing and nobody who could do anything!

Ds is 4 and since he was about 3 he has hated getting his hair cut, shaved and trimmed, it is like a military operation and he screams and cries and fights and foams at the mouth with fear (not joking either). He is mixed race so his hair grows thick, curly and fast. He freaks out even more if dh does it as dh looses his temper quite quickly and is a bit rough I feel. So what I do now is plug a set of head phones into our telly and put a film on that he wants to watch and I get the clippers and I shave his head as quickly as I possibly can. Because dh is not involved he tends to stay a little calmer but still panicks when you have to do the back of his neck and round his ears. These two areas take the longest but because it is only me and him in the house when it is done it is a better atomosphere, we also have 5 minute breaks so that he can go and look in the mirror to see how is hair looks and we have a giggle if only half of his head is done. Also we used to leave it for about 3 months each time but I feel that made it worse, so now it is done every 4-5 weeks so that he can get used to it. He frets every time he sees me bring out the clippers but he knows that mummy is going to do it anyway and he always gets a treat afterwards.

Ooh, Crunchie, you've got a clever determined one there!

I wrote about this in a thread not long ago 'grooming the ungroomable' though dd is a fair bit younger, 17 months. But I was just thinking about the difference between boys and girls. Boys are more problem in that they possibly need their hair cutting more frequently (depending how traditional you are of course!), but then they can be clipped which would last for ages. Girls you can let it grow a bit more but then it gets into a real mess and there's no 'easy' cutting style like clipping (depending again on how traditional you are!).

OOh we had (still slightly have!!) the same problem, after 3 episodes of throwing up on me in the hairdressers, i spent 2 years cutting my DS's hair while he was asleep in the car seat and tipping the seat slightly from side to side to get at all the bits and pieces he ended up looking quite lop side most of the time. Then DP and i resorted to blackmail he goes to daddies hair dresser, sits on daddies lap and and knows that as soon as its all done he can go to the sweet shop next door and get a magazine or small toy. I works a treat but then i have an easily bribable child. Good luck to you:0

LEAVE IT LONG!

Have you tried cutting it whilst he's in the highchair drawing/painting or doing jigsaws? I used to be a hairstylist and gave the kids lollipops (sometimes during but they could get hairy lol) or you could give him a bag of crisps or sweets.
I hope you find a soloution soon.

M2T - do you live anywhere near Brent Cross? There is a kiddies hairdresser there - part of a shop called Trotters. Kids get hair cut in front of fish tank - worth a try
