hello

my little darling daughter will be one next month - cant beleive it!!! i have noticed that she has grown tired of most of her toys or it might be that her new trick crusing is more fun.

i want to buy her a few new stimulating toys, has anyone recently bought their one year olds a new toy that they thought was a good buy?

i have looked in the shops and cant decide.

thank you

yrs I got it at argos - she will play with that for years.althought htey seem to have made it bigger

OR the happy track from elc is good and oyu cna dd to it if need be.and this is also very pop

LIZS · 03/03/2004 18:25

Second Little People - we have loads between the 2 kids. dd got a house for her 1st birthday and some farm bits and a large car and extra people the following Christmas. She is now 2.5 and plays with it loads and with elder brother who has garage and an old version of the town. Otherwise an activity table, especially one with a removable lid for sand/water is good for a confined space. They can support themselves whilst doing things on their feet. Ours was ELC (possibly Berchet)5 yrs ago but think Chicco etc do similar now.

LIZS · 03/03/2004 18:32

I was thinking of this sort of thing

LIZS · 03/03/2004 18:36

or wider choice here

Hulababy · 03/03/2004 18:50

Some ideas:

Little Tikes kitchen (for 9 months - 36 months)

Pop up ball blast

Little Tikes plastic rocking horse - only £9.99 in Toys R Us

DD loved babies and doll's pushchair things.

Wooden bricks - ELC have a big tub of them

Lots of books, colouring books, crayons, etc. too

Lara2 · 03/03/2004 19:42

Rainsticks - ELC do them. My 1 year old neice loves hers!!

CountessDracula · 03/03/2004 19:51

Bought dd a little wooden sit-on cow that has wheels for her 1st bday and she adores it!

Evita · 03/03/2004 20:24

Probably a bit more boring but I guess you've got lots of stacking cups and rings? I found dd got really into those simple kind of things first before she got interested in the activity board type stuff. Also as an alternative to the bricks and trolley you can get a lovely Noah's Arc from ELC which gave dd hours of fun at that age. And don't forget books! Books really start to come into their own around 1 year old.

But these are probably v. obvious and dull suggestions! We haven't been able to buy dd a lot of v. expensive toys so have improvised with kitchen stuff rather a lot. Blue Peter eat your heart out ...

Do you know my ds has sooooo many toys (very spoilt 1st child, 1st grandson!) but he gets more enjoyment out of spoons and pots!

So my advice would be keep it simple and imaginative! Dont part with your money. He also loves boxes! We spent a fortune on this thomas the tank engine rail way set - he prefered the box - so I reckon that you cant go wrong! Most of the developmental toys I have got him he plays with for a little while and then it gets chucked in the toys box never to be seen again.
I agree with Evita about books. cant go wrong with books.
Also I send ds letters. I put pictures and things through the post. When the postman comes he toddles to the front door and brings me my mail (like a puppy!). Then I say "oh this one is for you" and we open it up. He gets so excited and all for the price of a stamp!

Paula71 · 03/03/2004 20:55

I bought the Little People garage for ds twins' first birthday (as well as a whole bunch of other stuff, my apology for lousy timing giving them a birthday between Christmas and New Year!)

The new one looks much better!

I found they liked things that they could make a noise with, drums, xylophones, little pianos! You'll end up with a headache but she'll have great fun- and the pots and spoons idea for more noise!

stripey · 03/03/2004 21:35

My DS2 now 18mths loves stacking cups and hoops also books with musical buttons eg Winnie the Pooh Motzart or Spots Nursery Rhymes will play them for ages. He has always been facinated by pressing buttons. I find he now enjoys my 3 yr olds toys a lot more than my 3 yr old too.

OldieMum · 03/03/2004 22:01

DD is almost 14 months old. We gave her a Little Tykes plastic rocking horse at Xmas - best ten quid I've spent for a long time. Then my mother gave her a wooden ride-on dog for her birthday and she loves it, too. She has finally started to get interested in all the soft toys she was given at birth - loves to hug them. She also likes musical instruments (drum, tambourine, castanets)and the animals from a toy ark. She likes stacking rings, but mainly to use as bangles. But most of all, she likes books. She still likes lift-the-flap books, but she is now also very interested in picture books. Her absolute favourite is Nick Butterworth's 'One Snowy Night', which has lots of animal pictures. Indeed, anything connected with animals appeals to her. I hope this is helpful!

OldieMum · 03/03/2004 22:05

Oh, and she loves jigsaw puzzles (the kind with knobs you grasp to lift the pieces out).

handlemecarefully · 04/03/2004 08:06

I started buying Little People sets (got them from Toys R Us)for my dd when she turned one. The house that you can buy has mummy, daddy and baby figures in it, and a toilet which makes a flushing sound, a washing machine that sounds like a washing machine, a telephone that makes a ringing noise when pressed, a pc accompanied by appropriate noise and a toaster (again with noises). Or you can get the farm which has a chicken, sheep, cow and horse all with appropriate sounds. They cost about £20 something per set.

Has she got a doll yet? - they tend to respond to dolls from this age i.e. feeding and cuddling them etc

chicaguapa · 11/03/2004 22:36

We bought our DD the Little People farm for her 1st b'day. It was an instant hit because of the animal sounds and she still plays with it now 18 months on. She also got an easel and had to stand on a step to reach it! But loved the painting (if you can cope with the tidying up!)

Hulababy · 12/03/2004 17:45

On the same thread as the posts below, DD now loves the ELC Happy Land sets. She didn't get them until Christmas when she was 20 months but would have still liked them before that - played with her friends before hand.

She has the house, farm and the hospital. All have sound effects and are nice and colourful. We are going to get the trainset next I think.

suzywong · 12/03/2004 18:00

I'd have to second the musical instruments, maraccas, cymbals, xylaphone and mouth organ. But never, for the love of God, a recorder.
