Poo - can anyone help?

Sorry for the abrupt title. Thought people might want to avoid if they're eating their dinner!

My 11 months old seems to have really runny poo. Not like diarrhoea. just not formed and rather squidgy. Like all over clothes escape nappy squidgy. I'm not sure this is normal! Shouldn't they be formed by now?

background info: was diagnosed with a cows milk allergy and an egg allergy. We first noticed it at 6 months, took to GP, they said it as probably allergy, went to allergy clinic with specialist who definitely diagnosed a milk and egg allergy at 9 months.

He's breast fed and has had the odd bottle of soya formula if I'm away (like 6 in 6 months). feeding twice a day, mid morning and before bed. He has quite a lot of soya milk on his Weetabix, has about a soya yoghurt a day and can have soya cheese. Sometimes he has goats milk/cheese and has seemed ok with that.

Is his diet anything to do with the squidgy poos? Should I be avoiding soya and or goats milk? His initial reaction was to have a really red and itchy puffed up face and body if cows milk or eggs go anywhere near his mouth. None of that with soya or goats milk.

Anybody come across anything similar?

My ds had squishy poo most of the time and he never had any allergies, he had regular nappy explosions. It wasn't until nearer 2 that they started to firm up? You probably wouldn't be worrying if there weren't allergy issues and if he isn't having any other allergy symptoms then just monitor it. Hope this helps! x

My son had horrific poos and he ended up being coeliac. I'd ask for some more tests.

Hmmm read mummy's post above and thought don't worry, then the next post made me think take him to the docs! Might ring hv I think.

DS1 had gut problems and ds2 has poos like the ones you describe.

They are both tongue tied, although ds2's is much less severe than ds1's was. Tongue tie can cause gastric problems because the inability to chew and swallow correctly has a knock on effect through the gut.

Allergies and intolerences are common in tied kids. Has he ever been properly checked for it?

BotBotticelli · 10/01/2014 10:49

My DS does not have a tongue tie or an allergies but his poos are like a squidgy mess and they frequently leak out into the legs of his vests :-(

He is 13mo.

Annoyingly they were quite firm (the sort that would roll off the nappy) for a while when I started weaning him at 6mo but since about 9mo they have been quite loose. I have put it down to teething and various colds/illnesses generally making him a bit under the weather. He is gaining weight, staying on the 75th centile and is happy and well in himself so ibhabe just ignored it. But maybe if you are worried you should check it out?

Also does your LO eat a lot of fruit? Mine does, as snacks and a pudding. I have always presumed this has made his poos a bit loose, but would rather give him fruit for pudding than cakes/chocolates etc...

My DS has also been diagnosed with cows milk allergy (well more of an intolerence tbh) and I was told to also avoid soya and goats milk.
My DS had very bad colic symptoms and very runny poo until I eliminated cows milk. After a week his poo was 'normal' again. Could be worth trying to eliminate soya and goats milk to see?

SimLondon · 11/01/2014 20:38

50% of those allergic to cows milk will also have a problem with soya, our consultant told us to use Oat milk (not soya or rice) but our LO was over 12 months - when we did that.

My dd always had poos like this. I was really worried about toilet training but they firmed up as soon as she started using the toilet (2.5ish). No idea why!

babySophieRose · 12/01/2014 10:57

My DD use to have a runny poo around 1-1 1/2 and it was due to eating fruits and drinking cows milk. It is also called toddler diarrhoea and they grow out of it in a few months. So we just kept her on formula milk for a bit longer and offered more yoghurts and less fruit for a few months.

dannydyerismydad · 12/01/2014 11:01

There are links between loose toddler stools and a lack of fat in the diet. A healthy toddler diet contains a lot more fat than a healthy adult diet.

We also had to cut whole grain (whole meal bread and weetabix in particular) out of DS's diet as it shot straight through him.

Just wanted to second what was said earlier about getting more tests. my ds was also diagnosed coeliac and one of symptoms was runny nappy with undigested food in. Other symptoms were having pot belly and being v tired/ grumpy. I've read somewhere that coeliac disease can trigger lactose intorrarance because if the damage ( temporary) to the intestines. Hope you get some answers - go with your mummy gut instinct and get things checked out.
