Silent reflux? Wind?!

Hi, I'm not sure if this is the best place to post this but I'm struggling with what I think is silent reflux in my newborn. She's 4 weeks old and she cries/screams a lot, sometimes for literally hours at night. She seems uncomfortable after lots of her feeds and is hard to settle - impossible to soothe sometimes. I'm still hoping it's just a tricky period and will get better naturally but I've got an appointment today with my GP to talk about options.

Just wondering if anyone has any experience of this or advice? Thanks

Have you tried raising the head end of the cot or basket to see if that helps. Does baby settle when you pick up etc, if so probably more to do with baby wanting a 'fourth trimester' than reflux or wind. Hope bubba settles soon.

Will baby settle if you feed again or hold her?

And if you think it could be wind, are you bfing or ffing? If you are bfing, have you spoken to a BFC? If ffing have you tried winding before, during and after a feed? Have you tried swapping brands and using anti colic bottles?

I'm bf and she seems to take it well, although she is slurpy and makes a high pitched squeak while feeding. I try and wind her as best I can. She's cried lots today and barely napped - she's very alert, wheezy all the time and makes coughing/choking sounds. She won't be soothed even when I pick her up and cuddle her, have been trying to calm her for hours.

The GP gave us gaviscon today so going to try that. Any advice or experience would help. It's so tough!

That sounds really tough. Have you spoken to a BFC yet? Has she been checked for tongue tie? Sounds like it could be a possibility.

A GP has checked her for tongue tie and said she doesn't have it. I haven't seen a BFC but the midwife who visited me after I got back from hospital said she seems to be latching ok. It is so tough, to be honest it's absolutely breaking my heart - we tried for a year and a half to conceive and I'm over the moon to have her but to watch her so distressed this often feels like torture!

No disrespect to your HV or mw but they have probably received no or very little bfing training. I'd speak to a BFC on one of the helplines this evening, visit a Bfing Support Group if you can and think about seeing a Lactactation Consultant.

The details are here Smile

Did you manage to have a read of the tongue tie link at all? Did any of it sound like what is happening?
