I am really going spare. My 22 month old ds is gorgeous and wonderful but is so BLOODY STUBBORN! I have been trying for the last hour to get a nappy on him so that we can go out before it gets really hot. He is having none of it. The situation has been getting worse as the weather gets hotter, and often it takes his Dad to hold him while I try to put the nappy on him, but his Dad is at work today and I am on my own. He is so strong, and puts up such a fight, I simply cannot get a nappy on him at all! How ridiculous is that? He won't put a T shirt on either. I just want us to go out and here we are in our tiny cramped flat with him running around naked demanding lollies [ which we haven't got because we need to go out to go the shops. ] What do I do? Please????

BTW the lollies we get are fruit ones from MandS, no sugar or colourings, and he has fish oil and a very good diet. Doesn't make him any less stubborn though...

Does the lure of the lollies not help?

Kids are the most stubborn people on the face of the planet. Look at it this way he's helping you develop your patience.

How about sticking him in a room with my 22 month dd, and letting them run around with no nappies together

Sorry, no help here, I'm having to use wrestling techniques to get her dressed at the moment.

he doesn't quite get the logic of having to go OUT to get lollies yet, they should just appear in the freezer, or why he should get DRESSED to go out - he wants to go out naked with his sandals on! I would love to let him run about with your dd Missy Cocker, nothing much else we can do today as it seems! he is stronger than me, or at least more wriggly, i can't get him dressed even by force, even if i wanted to.

Ruty - You need to take control. They are incredibly stubborn and only get worse. DS is terrible to get dressed and change his nappy and sometimes I have to pin him down. It becomes a game if you follow them around when trying to get them dressed or change their nappy.

I always try to distract ds first by giving him a drink (he thinks it's juice but it's actually a vit & mineral powder in water) or fruit, etc then change his nappy when he is busy eating/drinking. Can you try Pull Ups? Might be easier.

When dressing I try to give him two choices and let him choose which he wants to wear. Its usually the clothes with his favourite characters on them and try to get him to dress himself. Although, I would avoid getting PJs with characters on because he then doesn't want to get out of them.

just to let you know you're not alone. DS (2 in September) is the same. Very stubborn, very strong and just too hot to keep his clothes on. All he keeps doing is dragging out his swimming trunks and demanding for me to put them on with a very firm 'ugh'

ruty · 25/07/2006 10:20

just managed to put nappy on and dress him. so stressful as he gets so upset. i guess i eventually wore him down with the nappy but he was still wriggling like a fish and kicking like a...kicking thing. anyway, struggle over for an hour or two. gave him some sorbet as a reward and now he wants to finish the whole pot! But he's calmed down now thankfully. He doesn't seem to have a preference yet for clothes - his only preference is nakedness right now! Phew.
