What age did you toddler move from highchair to adult chair

Just wondering what sort of age people's children stop using a highchair and using adult dining chairs? We have a highchair for DD at the dining table, plus a little table and chair in the kitchen which she sometimes sits at for breakfast - but what age did your children move to a 'normal' chair?

We used the high chair without tray pulled up at table as a chair until she was nearly 3.

Skintorama · 02/01/2014 11:35

Ds2 is 2.3 and hasn't used his booster for about six months.

We have one of those IKEA tall chairs so he sits higher but on a normal ish seat.

Eastpoint · 02/01/2014 11:36

We used booster seats as they weren't tall enough to sit at the table properly when they first outgrew the highchair.

3 with the first 3

2 for the youngest but on reflection it was a mistake as we have struggled to keep him at the table.

Toecheese · 02/01/2014 12:47

No boosters here

sparklythings01 · 02/01/2014 19:39

Booster seat attached to dining chair from 2.

ilovepowerhoop · 02/01/2014 19:42

booster seat attached to a chair from 18 months

UntamedShrew · 02/01/2014 19:45

Normal chair from 2 but she is tall

caz05 · 02/01/2014 20:16

My LO is 2.5 and currently sits at the normal adult chair at the table and has done for about 6 months. Depends on the individual child I suppose and how likely they to stay sitting still whilst eating.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 02/01/2014 20:21

DD2 ditched the high chair at just over a year and refused the booster at about 18 months Hmm

ElBombero · 02/01/2014 20:25

Booster from about 2 but become a faff so normal chairs from about 2.3

addictedtosugar · 02/01/2014 20:30

DS1 booster from about 2. Can't remember when we ditched that - but before 3y6m (as DS2 was in it!)
DS1 booster from 18 mths. Still in at 2y8, however we didn't take it away at Christmas, and he sometimes insists on a normal chair.

DeathMetalMum · 02/01/2014 20:35

Dd is nearly 3 and has a booster seat. Also never used a highchair and both dc's 2.11 and 10 months have booster seats. Dd1 has not had the tray on for a while. Whenout and about eating dd just has a normal chair but she can't quite reach comfatably so will be in a booster until she can.

zipzap · 02/01/2014 20:48

Probably about 2 1/2 - 3 for both dc. But they went onto the taller ikea chairs, and at 8 & 5 (albeit on the smaller size for their ages) are still very happy on them.

Dh & I can perch quite happily on them too so they are a good investment rather than a short term thing! They are also incredibly popular whenever we have kids over to visit or play - they always want to sit on them and the dc then have to sit on ordinary chairs. Needless to say, the dc have the choice of adult or their tall chairs and they still choose to sit in their tall chairs.

surroundedbyblondes · 02/01/2014 20:52

DDs have the tripp trapp chairs and still sit on them now at 5 and 3 yo. As others have said it's good for them to be up a bit higher, not just for eating but crafts, drawing etc. And they're sturdy enough for DH & I to perch on too!

TheFabulousIdiot · 02/01/2014 21:41

DS hasn't sat in a high chair since he was about 18 months or maybe younger. We have a great tall chair from idea, possibly discontinued and bought from eBay. It has splayed out legs so won't topple over. I do wonder though if the reason he won't sit still at the table for any length of time is because we stopped putting him in a high chair. He's the same with supermarket trolleys.

marmitecat · 02/01/2014 21:49

Eldest is 8 and still in his tripp trapp. All 3 v possessive of their tripp trapps and I imagine will use them for another few years.

beela · 02/01/2014 22:03

Booster seat from about 18 months, then normal chair at about 2.5, I think.

snowgirl1 · 03/01/2014 11:18

Thanks for the feedback everyone. DD is just 2 and when we were on holiday at Christmas was quite happy to sit on normal chairs (and rejected the booster the hotel provided), but I do wonder how easily we'd keep her at the table at home if she was on a normal chair!

For those of you using boosters/the high Ikea chairs how do you children get on to them? Can they manage to get up and down themselves? Do you help them on or have a step? Just wondering what the advantage might be compared to a high chair if you have to help them on/off.

The IKEA chairs have a bar on the front to rest feet on. My 2yo uses that; the 5yo is tall enough to just sit down.

2yo has used that chair since 18mo or younger, I can't remember. We switched when he could undo his high chair harness and climb on to the table ::gulp::

CairoPrapstar · 03/01/2014 12:25

My 4yo is still on a stool and he loves it as it is his he doesn't realise that it was also his DBs I can't see him moving to an adult chair any time soon although he manages fine at other peoples houses

KatOD · 03/01/2014 12:30

DD point blank refused to sit in her high chair with or without tray from 18mo so it's been a booster seat on a dining chair ever since. Now she's turned 2 she's fine on normal chairs when we go out (she's very tall though).

addictedtosugar · 03/01/2014 16:01

For me, the booster means they are AT the table, rather than to the side of it (which is the way our highchair/table combo worked).
DS2 can climb into the booster, but he can climb lots of things many other his age can't...

Flukewoman · 03/01/2014 16:04

DD moved to an adult chair at about 18 months - she was a highchair and booster refuser, and we ended up with a slightly lower table which was easier for her to reach. She still can't sit still though so falls off at least a couple of times a week Confused
