baby nightmares?

my 10-week old dd is a happy baby who normally wakes up quietly and plays/coos on her own for a while, but she has recently started suddenly waking up from her naps screaming. She'll be perfectly asleep with one second, and the next she's crying and sounding terrified - still with her eyes closed, so it's not like she's waking up and calling for me. Even if I'm right next to her and soothe her immediately, it takes her a while to stop screaming her little lungs out.

I'm assuming she's having bad dreams? and I guess I'm really just looking for reassurance that it's perfectly normal to have nap terrors at her age?..

My 7 week old DD has also done this leading me to wonder if she's had a bad dream. Peaceful one minute, proper crying the next - no build up!

Logic tells me that dreams - good or bad - can occur at any age.

So sad to think of them having a bad dream :(

I know, it breaks my heart... (I am still a bit of a hormonal mess Blush)

I also wonder what baby bad dreams consist of. Nothing gets her that terrified in real life! She'll get upset of course if tired or hungry or bored etc, but not really scared. But she does sound scared when she wakes up screaming :-(

DS went through a phase of this when he was a few months old, happens much less frequently now. It's upsetting, but I don't think they remember later.

Yes agree with catcatcat bubba often often burps when I pick up and cuddle him.
I do believe they have dreams that upset or frighten them my lo does it too. I asked the doc he said they may not even be awake, check before you pick them up, as disturbing them can make it worse. But I can't help pick up immediately he sounds so sad.

I agree I believe even a at young age babies can have frightening dreams aswell as nice dreams. Last night my 7mnth DS woke up at about 10.30ish screaming and crying with tears down his face Sad. It is quite distressing but i tjust quickly comfort him either stroking his cheeks or hair or pick him for a cuddle.

My ds did this for a week or so at about 16 weeks. Always at his last nap of the day for some reason. As with most things it will probably pass. I think their little brains are just overloaded with all the new things they are taking in.
