Gro bag to duvet?

Mand0410 · 29/12/2013 21:34

Hi

I'm just looking for a bit of advice really. Our Lo is almost 15 months & we're looking to switch him from a sleeping bag which he's had for over a year now to a baby duvet. He moves around through the night pretty constantly & we're worried about him moving under his covers (I'll obviously tuck him in securely, but he's a strong boy). Just wondering if anyone has any advice on switching him over? We're also wondering about how many layers to put on him. The gro bags all come with instructions on how warm the room should be for them, I'm not sure about his duvet. Any advice would be gratefully appreciated.

Why are you switching? I wouldn't unless you're moving him to a bed.

Mand0410 · 29/12/2013 21:43

We're switching because it has to be done at some point. Plus, we're spending a fortune on sleeping bags for him when we have a perfectly good bedding set that's been in his wardrobe since before he was born. We're getting him a pillow as well so thought it made sense to introduce the duvet at/around the same time.

Yes but there's no rush if the bags still fit? I only have 2 for my dd.

I wouldn't switch if a) they fit and b) he's not going into a bed and c) in the winter you're more likely to get night wakings if he kicks the duvet off and gets cold.

My ds moved to a bed at 20 months and we went to a duvet. It was a right pain - took him a while before he could rearrange his duvet in the night. In hindsight, 20 months was too young. That's why I'm waiting a bit longer with dd - hence me asking.

ds was in a grobag until he was 2½ years old and went into a bed

NorbertDentressangle · 29/12/2013 21:55

When my DC moved from a cot to a bed (and hence from a gro-bag to duvet) I put the duvet on sideways and loosely tucked it in under the mattress IYSWIM . However they were older than your DC.

BobaFetaCheese · 29/12/2013 21:59

DS1 decided he was out of grobags at 18m (2 days after I'd bought 4 new ones grh!) as he started unzipping them and climbing out.

He's just turned 2 and we put him in one layer of clothing and then the duvet on top (he's in a cot still), he's never woken up because he's kicked the duvet off...he was a bit odd about the duvet the first time but he loved his pillows from the second he saw them!

The grocompany do a gro duvet thingy which zips onto the sheet so it's a bit like a sleeping bag and it's got a pocket for the pillow so that can't move around either.

fishybits · 29/12/2013 22:02

We've just this weekend put DD under a duvet. We've done it because she keeps taking her sleeping bag off and getting very cold dh did cable tie the zips together but that seems a little extreme to me So far so good but it's only been two nights and I have to keep checking if she's soiled her nappy and then changing it as she is dry during the day and hates her nappy on at all, poo smeared all over her cot bed is not something I want to wake up to.

Mand0410 · 29/12/2013 22:05

The bags fit at the moment, but wont for much longer. My Lo's pretty tall for his age, I was hoping to avoid purchasing the next size up, but it's starting to look like we're going to have too. Good tip on the night waking a in the winter. Thanks for the advice-x-

You can try fleecy PJs which will help if you do switch.

Mand0410 · 29/12/2013 22:21

Brilliant. We were bought some for christmas-x-

Groduvet (wouldn't load for me earlier).

fishybits, is DD big enough for training pants? DS1 is a nappy escape artist and once he got wise to putting a disposable on back to front (tabs at back), we went for pants as he lacks the coordination to get them off mwhaha!

fishybits · 30/12/2013 05:59

Hadn't thought of nappy on back to front, will give that a go doh! . She gets her knickers, tights and trousers off at every opportunity so not sure if training pants would prove too much of a challenge or not. At 23 months not much phases her, it'll be good when her inhibitions kick in Grin

MigGril · 30/12/2013 06:31

DS is still in gro bags at 3 years. He's been in a bed since 2 but I've tried to get him under the dovay but he just wakes up cold at this time of year. He can do anything in his gro bag, including climbing so even though he knows how to get out of it he doesn't bother.

DD on the other hand was in a bed with duvet quit a lot younger but she seemed to be able to rearrange it herself, and I don't think she wiggled in her sleep as much either. DS is all over the place.

mamapants · 30/12/2013 07:04

DS refused to go back in a grobag after the summer, so when he was about 14mths and has had a duvet since then.
We've had no problems.
He is in a bed though not cot.
It is very cute watching him tuck himself into bed for a story.

MinesAPintOfTea · 30/12/2013 07:09

I didn't want to buy ds new sleeping bags for this winter, after two Weeks of night wakings due to lost covers I caved. It seems they either do well or not with the duvet, as you've got one why not just try it?

Aquariusgirl86 · 30/12/2013 07:25

I kept escape artist dc1 in a sleeping bag until she moved to a bed at 18 months as it was the only way of stopping her climbing out as the gro bag restricted her leg movements so she couldn't climb out, without a gro bag age could climb out at 12 months and ended up in a+e with an egg shaped bruise on her forehead. Dc2 is 16 months and still in a cot and I'd never put him in without a sleeping bag as he's tall and very able ( walking since 10m) and I'm sure without the gro bag he too could climb out, I'll only switch to bedding when he goes in a bed, probably in the next few months as I now have a fear of babies getting out of cots.
The gro to bed duvets zip on to the bed and I found them great with dc1, though only generally zipped one side

couldsleepforahundredyears · 30/12/2013 07:33

We made the switch about a month ago, when he was 14 months. I had the same concerns as you. All I can say is don't worry, just go for it. My boy is one wriggly worm. Usually he ends up on top of the covers. I always tuck him in before I go to bed. Just make sure the room is about 19 degrees, and the pyjamas are warm and it doesn't matter if the covers don't stay on. The switch over from bag to duvet did not phase my boy one iota! Go

Splatt34 · 30/12/2013 08:54

Even when we took DDs cot sides off at 22 months I kept her in a grow bag (if for no other reason than to stop her getting out of bed!). Only switched at 2.5 years when she was too big for the 18-36 bag.

Have a look for second hand, all our sleeping bags were bought from ebay or nearly new sales.

Polkadot1 · 30/12/2013 21:55

Hi- where can you buy 18-36 month Grobags? Our DS is 15 months but tall, so soon will grow out of the up to 18 month ones- but I love using grobags!

the gro duvets are without a doubt the best money we have spent - 2nd han off ebay but out ds1 was in sleeping bags till 2 yrs old then tried in vain for 6 months with an already bad sleeper to settle with duvet ( dh idea not mine with a 6 month old as well! ) .

hes still in cot now at 3 yrs old and since getting the zip in duvet has helped him to sleep better .

we also bought a few of the 18 to 36 month sleep bags of ebay as ds1 was in them as tall for his age to give us options x

Artandco · 31/12/2013 23:21

Baby merino sell them in 2 sizes. 0-2 years, and 2-4 years. Great as the merino keeps warms in winter and them cool in summer. So you only need to buy x2 of each size ( one on one in wash) and lasts until 4 years.
