Dosed on Calpol - feeling guilty....

Have I done the right thing?
Had a real week with my 6 month old son...sleeping badly at night..waking up with very sad sounding cry. I wondered whether it could be his teeth but no dribbling or red cheeks. I dont think its the heat as we have given in and put an aircon unit in our room so it's not too bad. Also started weaning so could be a sore tummy.
I gave him 5ml of calpol last night and he slept really well (back to his old ways of one feed around 3.30). He seemed really happy today and had some good sleeps.
I gave him another 5ml tonight and now feel so guilty. I don't want to give it to him just to make him sleep.
Any advice/words of wisdom please?

Nothing to feel guilty about. Sometimes there are no obvious signs of teething, but you know something isn't right/they are in pain. I have given calpol over 2 or 3 nights to both my children as babies if I felt they needed it.

Sorry off topic but where did you get your Air con unit from?

Was it recently ie do you think they still stock them?

misdee · 22/07/2006 21:47

calpol wont send him to sleep. he was obviously in discomfort with pain/temp somewhere, and the calpol worked.

Thanks puff. I just don't want to use it if its not needed (I'll put up with a headache rather than pop pills...my mums mantra was always 'have a pint of water and a lay down'!!) but I don't want him to be in pain.
Very tricky when they can't tell you what they need.

DO NOT FEEL GUILTY!

Calpol is safe to give him!

I know what you mean about not wanting to give it unecessarily but tbh if it gives him two or three nights good sleep then this is as important I reckon as it would be for teething or something.

Anyway, calpol doesn't actually 'make' them sleep, it doesn't have any soporific ingredient that I know of - so if it has helped him sleep then he probably does have a pain or ache somewhere that the calpol has eased. I wouldn't worry at all.

Thanks Misdee...thats good to know. I think I just assumed that it was slightly sedative. I guess you can't use it forever though so where do you draw the line?

On aircon unit ...it was homebase...DH has wanted one for ages and now has a good excuse! Its pretty good but quite big and noisy. Although its a constant noise so not too disturbing!

Thanks I will tell DH

Dont feel guilty....

5 ml of calpol will not harm him...

he will probably sleep better and more soundly as a result and feel happier tomorrow... he will therefore be less likely to be over tired and have a happy day tomorrow, and thus be able to fall asleep witout calpol tomorrow night and you can continue your routines of good nights sleep

Nothing to feel guilty about IMO

I normally try three nights in a row with Calpol. If sleeping better, then leave it the fourth night. DD is normally fine. Would only continue if she's showing obvious signs during the day that she's in pain.

nothing to feel guilty about as long as you arent using calpol every time your son cries in pain, only in cases of real need. calpol usually does not induce sleep, the sleep probably comes easier as a result of the pain being eased.

hope its better now. dont feel bad mom!!
