Monkeying about at bedtime

Ds is 2.5 and in a bed- I can put up with most things and he settles after about three times getting out and getting put back but he does this thing where he wees (a tiny amount) in his nappy so that he can get up and ask me or dh to change him. It drives me mad as it is a waste of a nappy and I KNOW he is doing it on purpose. I should say he is in pants in the day and does a wee before his bath in the potty so he is definitely peeing in his nappy on purpose. Yesterday I refused to change him so he went into the bathroom by himself, took his nappy off, then went to bed and felt asleep with no nappy on. That meant I had to wake him up to put one on again ......Any tips on how to stop this? He is doing it to avoid going to bed at lunchtime as well but I've given up on fighting with him where that's concerned now.

Why did you have to wake him up to put a nappy on? I can put a nappy on my sleeping DD - disposibles that is.

They are pull ups - bit tricky to put on sleeping child!

My dd went through a short spell of not wanting nappy at night. I used bribery - gave her a sweet or sticker if she promised to keep her nappy on. Maybe the easy option but by bed time I have short fuse and don't want hassle of wet sheets.

I just left DD nappy-less... a couple of nights of soggy sheets, and she is now perfectly happy to keep her nappy on.

Ooops... that was flamesparrow, not psychomum

It isn't that he wants no nappy on at bedtime it is just he doesn't want to go to sleep! So weeing a miniscule amount in his nappy is just another excuse for not going to bed yet.....

Suggest you stay firm with him. My DD gets 1 small drink of water - her delay tactic. While she drinks it I leave the room 'Mummy getting on with her jobs'this stops her engaging me in chat/delaying. I take back empty cup and last kiss good night. Explain that Mummy loves her but I won't come back in to her room as it is sleep time now. It does work for us. I am firm as I am exhaused by 7.30 and have dishwasher to unload, dinner to cook etc. Is he delaying because of hot weather. I am now putting DD to bed later as too hot in her room, I take her to paygrounf for 1.5 hrs as soon as I get in as hoep it will make her physically exhaused enough to sleep in heat.

DD has far too much energy. She has a stairgate on her door, and if she is not sleepy at bedtime, she is allowed up to an hour extra to play quietly... but alone. I will not be coming back for nappy changes etc - she calls if she needs a wee (very rarely), and if she doesn't bother, she doesn't get a fresh nappy.

I am probably just mean, but she exhausts me so much that it is normally a case of not going back to her vs killing her

Lasvegas · 21/07/2006 15:06

captain agree with you on potential murder. I have so many chores to do once she is in bed I don't have the energy to deal with delaying tactics. Moreover if she doesn't get 12 hrs sleep it is really hard getting her up for nursery in the morning. She gets my full attention from 5.45pm - to 7.30pm and tbh I have nothing more to give at 7.30.

My ds 2.5 and i ahd to stop his day time naps because he would not go to sleep for ages (running in his room, playing etc) It was difficult at first (trying not to let him sleep in afternoons) but he is in bed by 7 and sleeps through because he is so tired.

Then it gives me planty of q time with my baby, feet up and glass or two of wine
