Anyone have a child who speaks through their nose?

My DS will be three in February and was slightly speech delayed, although not abnormally for his age group. However, the problem lies in his pronunciation as he says several sounds through his nose.

To put it into context, it is like listening to someone talking through a walkie talkie or like Darth Vadar!

This applies to the following sounds: s, d, t, sh, ch, and z.

He is having speech therapy and has seen a paediatrician and they believe it is a mechanical problem so are trying to re-tune the way he talks. He can now say f sounds very well which is his first progress box ticked.

Just wondered if anyone else has had similar experiences (I get the impression it is rare!) and if you have any advice please? What was the outcome for your situation?

Thanks for your help!!

Please don't tell me DS is the only one in the world who does this?!

"talking through the nose" is an adenoidal problem, surely? Really very common and I understand they're supposed to grow out of it, but I'm not an expert. Is the speech therapy just to help in the meantime?

No, but I do have a H who talks through his arse. Grin

Apologies, only read the thread title....inappropriate reply. Sorry.

Well it made me laugh Grin

Lol mrs Bennett, made me laugh out loud!

Interesting mother of cheeses, no doctor has thought to have a look at his adenoids, perhaps they are enlarged. Thank you!

Actually, thinking about it, my ds2 does this a bit. He had speech therapy for other things (pronunciation help etc) and this has never been commented on. But then I don't think he does it all the time. He is 5 and when he does it makes it very hard to understand.
A month ago he also suddenly got adnoiditus, where his adenoids swelled up massively and were infected like tonsillitis. I wonder if the two are connected.
We are currently not seeing a speech therapist, so would be interested you know what your one says about this.

My DNephew does this - resulting in a speech delay - he needs his tonsils and adenoids out but it's not severe enough for this to happen yet...

ODearMe · 21/12/2013 08:23

That is v interesting about the adenoids, I had not considered it. My DS has good vocabulary and can put together long sentences, it is just others find him difficult to understand because the nasality warps his speech x

I think Ed Miliband does it too, unless he has a permanent cold . . .

ODearMe · 21/12/2013 23:05

If Ds speaks anywhere near as well as Ed Milliband I will be so pleased. DS is extremely nasally, I have never heard anything like it

I know this is super old so don’t know if you will see this or not but can you give an update on your son? How’s his speech now? My son talks through his nose too so am desperately looking for answers!

Baby210613 · 06/06/2019 19:33

Hi! My little boy talks theough his nose! He has oral dyspraxia. He had his tonsilsamd adenoids removed because of tonsilitis and has made his speech clearer but stoll through his nose
