Frustrated 9 mo failing to crawl and driving me MAD

Ds is 9 mo. I feel like he has been on the verge of crawling for weeks now but is still not there. He is up on all fours, rocking back and forward but more often than not ends up with his head down (forehead on floor), then seems to walk forward til his feet are under him then collapses in a heap.

This is leading to a lot of frustration on his part which is mainly shown in this horrible grunting/growling/ moaning sound in his chest. This noise is driving me spare. Like nails down a blackboard, want to poke my own ear drums out with sticks, spare.

He is generally very smiley when people are interacting with him but at the moment if he is not being actually held or directly played with / talked to he is basically unhappy. I am at my wits end and am so glad dh is only working 1.5 days next week.

Please tell me this sounds about right and won't last forever. Any tips?

Dd got the hang of crawling after hanging out for a weekend wit my lovely, totally baby-crazy sister who spent most of it crawling around demonstrating crawling and trying to encourage dd to do same. Worth a try? Or show him some slightly bigger babies?
Take him swimming for something different?
Music and dance. Blocks out the sound!

Ha ha. Dh and I have spent more time crawling around on the floor with him than we have since we were that age I suspect! We've also put toys put, iPhone, cat...(no cats were harmed in the making of this baby).

Should I be concerned that he has been trying for what feels like forever?

Sympathies: the three weeks or so whilst DS tried to master crawling were really the pits! It took him ages to get it and he was a flipping nightmare misery until he got there. Keep taking deep breaths and tell yourself it will pass? Stick your iPod on for 10 mins to block out the moaning??

StormyBrid · 20/12/2013 19:47

It won't last forever. It will feel like forever. We had a month of it, drove me demented. The past couple of weeks she's chilled out a lot and taken her first unaided steps, but she still can't crawl.

BonaDea · 20/12/2013 20:13

So glad it isn't just us! He has also started the last few days incessantly trying to pull himself up to standing. I just wish he would concentrate on crawling first. Now he has two things he can't do to complain about!!

My 11 month old finally started crawling 10 days ago after a frustrating 2 months of only being able to commando crawl in reverse. I was constantly fishing him out from under sofas etc and he would get so cross and frustrated. We put a huge Christmas tree up this year as I thought it would be safe as I had given up on him ever crawling. He took one look at it and mastered crawling in 2 days flat in order to get at it! Now he is into everything and gets really stroppy of I dare interrupt his adventuring to change his nappy or feed him lol. My tip...get a huge Christmas tree and put heaps of dangling baubles on it:-).

My DS was like yours for ages. He finally crawled at 10 and a half months - then walked a month later! He never liked crawling!!

BonaDea · 20/12/2013 21:12

Tree up. It's big and has nice baubles but no go. Honestly if the cat can't get him do it, I despair!

By the end of the day he is practically twitching with pent up energy. He needs to get moving. I had to put him to bed half an hour early tonight because I could listen to the grrrrrrr any more Confused

My 9 month old DD is exactly the same and driving me mad. She can bottom shuffle a little (to the Christmas tree) but is desperate to crawl and pull up. I am fed up with rescuing her from her frustrated little heap! She really looks like she could do it as well so whhhhyyyy is it taaakkkking so long?! I miss the sitting happily playing with a box of toys phase! Sorry, no help at all!

BonaDea · 20/12/2013 22:18

Chick. Yes!! I had a nice few weeks where I plonked down a box of toys and it took at least 10 mins for him to pull them out and throw them out of reach! No bum shuffling here - just pathetic backwards crawling ending up under the sofa!!

Is he able for a push-along walker? It is painful watching them try. At least the cat is having a last few days/weeks of peace!

AdorabeezleWinterpop · 21/12/2013 19:49

You have my sympathy. DS finally mastered crawling last week (at 8 months) after a good four weeks of trying and failing. It was a nightmare.

However, I have spent today chasing after him trying to stop him eating baubles, coal, magazines, fluff and DD. I'm not sure which phase was harder.

DD didn't ever crawl (walked at 9mo). I must remember to thank her for that Grin
