Desperate for help with 2 year old sleep

I've posted at other various times on this topic of my dd's sleep but things have now gotten much worse. Over the summer months she slept fine, about 11 hrs at night and a 1 hr 15 min ish nap. All was good.

Then she recently started only sleeping between 10 and 10.5 hrs at night regardless of nap length. She was starting to take a but longer to settle to sleep (between 20 and 45 mins). I was putting her down at 7.15 and she was always asleep by 8 if not 7.45.

Just recently however she has started to take an hour and a half or more to settle to sleep at night, meaning she isn't going to sleep until 9 ish. Which is just so late. She will then sleep 10 hrs. This seemed bad enough but I had just started to accept this when last night everything changed and got even worse! I put her down at 7.15, she fell asleep at 8.45 then she was awake between 2am and 5am. She then went off again only to wake at 6.45 for the day!! She has just had a 1.5 hr nap. So not much sleep at all in 24 hrs.

I am just shattered and I am also 7.5 months pregnant. I have no idea what to do to help improve her sleep and I don't know why she is taking so long to settle to sleep all of a sudden.

Can anyone offer the wisdom on this?

Thanks

what is her wind down, and bedtime, routine?

feekerry · 18/12/2013 18:43

is she in a bed or cot and is she in a sleeping bag or duvet??

Madallie · 18/12/2013 19:27

She has a bath then milk? Then I cuddle her as we go up the stairs. It's what we've always done. Books or songs have always stimulated her?

It's Just changed out of the blue.

She's in a cot and has a sleeping bag. Nothing has changed.

I'm really at a loss as to what is wrong and what to do.

Is she ready to drop her nap? Similar happened with my dd at 2.9. We resisted for a while but once the naps went nighttime is so much more consistent.
Sleeping 12/13 hours per night. I do miss her naps though!!

We also make sure she has loads if physical activity morning and afternoon to wear her out!

just a thought but my dd's sleep was getting worse and worse over a period of 6ish months and was taking longer and longer to get her to sleep. we had resorted to 45 mins of rocking before she would sleep. not easy as i am also now 8m pg....
we tried a duvet at 12 and 16 ish months and she hated it so went back to sleeping bag. tried it again at 20m and made a big fuss this time, got a peppa pig cover etc and she loves it now and it has.made such a huge difference to her sleep. she can decide how warm or cold to make herself and can get herself comfy. she now drops off on her own and sleeps all night. also started putting her to bed with a drink in a sippy cup which seems to have helped.... just think at 2 my dd was too big/wriggly for a sleeping bag!

Thanks for that idea a out the duvet. I guess I've been too worried to try anything new but she does love Peppa! Maybe that's worth a go.

Does you dd have a pillow? Mine refuses! X

yep got a fecking p pig pillow too. she loves it. its only a toddler pillow tho so tiny really. we really did make a big thing about how big girls sleep with their duvets etc etc.... tuck you in all snug etc etc... i also say now that teddies will keep her company and mummy will see you at 6am tomorrow morning and if you wake your teddies will help you get back to sleep as mummy will be sleeping in her own bed...blah blah.
sounds silly but they prob understand more than you think.
the duvet and drink to bed has really changed my dd's sleep for the better tho!

Duvet sounds like a good idea. Could she be hungry too?
