Worried about DD (2.11) who carries her toys everywhere

I'm getting a bit concerned about DD (who will be 3 next month). She's very attached to a select group of toys (her trains & cars) and insists on bringing every single one of them with her wherever she goes - this is even from one room to another. She now has a little box she puts them in and carries them around the house with her. I've even caught her with armfuls of toys going down the stairs.

She has to take all these toys to bed aswell and has an almighty screaming fit if you try to take any away with her.

I'm a hoarder so I'm worried that she's going the same way (my hoarding was started by my Dad throwing my things away when he felt like it so I'm sensitive to these things).

Is this normal behaviour or should I be doing something about it? It really worries me to think she might end up like me Sad

No idea but my Ds 3.6 does this. He always has a random selection of toys with him. He says its so his brother can't take them.

Totally normal Ime. I had to teach my dd to come down the stairs on her bum because she always insisted to carrying an armful of stuffed rabbits everywhere she went.

I must teach her to come down the stairs on her bum - good idea. She goes so quickly sometimes I don't notice she's on a different level of the house Blush.

Relieved to hear she's not the only one who does it. At what point does it become hoarding? I've always done it as far back as I can remember so I'm always watching for the signs.

Some child development expert (Tina Bruce?) said that children like to play in different ways. For example some children like to put things in bags, or cover things up, or carry things around. Perhaps it's just the way she likes to play and learn.

ninilegsintheair · 17/12/2013 13:51

Perhaps Spider. She gets very angsty if she (and me) can't carry them all in one go. And she has a thing for lining them all up in a big long line.

My dd does it a lot less now (she's 4 in feb). She'll bring her favorite rabbits down in the morning quite often but that's about it. She used to get completely furious if she couldn't carry them all in one go. I can't remember exactly when it stopped though.

This is reassuring, thanks ladies Smile

My DD (6) still does this and I have to pat her down each morning before school, otherwise she would empty her bedroom into the classroom.

It is good that she has developed a method for toting it all round though! My DD has HUNDREDs of bags which are all filled with stuff. I am still awaiting the passing of this phase, but it seems harmless enough. Xmas Grin

My DD has tonnes of bags too only Grin. It's fine until she wants to take them into bed with her too!

It is getting a little ridiculous - DD has to get me to carry half her stuff now as its too much for her. Interestingly when I take her to nursery she's happy to leave most of them behind as long as she can take her faves with her.

So glad I found this thread. They have a name! Transporters. My dd brings a bag of random items everywhere.Have to be careful what I get rid of because she will remember that the ladybird magnet with the broken wing is not under the old teddybear in the red box, if I try to remove anything!

ninilegsintheair · 18/12/2013 14:23

Transporters, lol it reminds me of transformers Grin.

Just found an interesting link to what Miaow describes here. DD is also a positioner since she likes to put her toys in lines. I make her sound very weird. Blush

perfectly fine. xx

Yup, totally normal. My DS (3.4) has been doing this for months. His cars have to 'watch him' do everything. Eat, sleep, use the toilet, watch him watch TV - everything.... My friends little boy is the same...
