Argh, 10m DS insists on using tv unit to pull to standing - repeatedly!!!

Already this morning I've had to retrieve him about 20 times in the space of about 30mins! I know he's obviously well chuffed he can do it but it's SO unsafe as he uses the DVD player, Xbox & skybox like a little hand ladder to get to the top where the tv stand is in easy reach & could be pulled on top of him. The first time he did it I'd nipped to the kitchen for 20 seconds & almost had a heart attack when I came back to find him standing there!

So I keep having to take him away when he tries to go for the unit but I'm so fed up of it!

Any tips to stop him? (I've tried a pillow already - he just waps it to one side haha!)

This is why we put our tv on the wall.

Play pen round it. Or round DS whenever you have to leave the room - whichever works for you.

We bolted our unit to the wall and the flat screen telly isn't so heavy but its still a worry. We bolted all heavy, climable furniture to the walls in fact.

Children have been killed pulling tvs onto themselves. Strap it to the wall or move it. You can't use a pillow...

try putting a towel or blanket over it. If he can't see it he may not know it's there

We put a large square storage box from Ikea in front of our TV unit so DS can't reach the DVD player or the telly. Once he's in bed it provides a place to stash his toys out of sight and a handy surface for my wine glass!
And because it's cube shaped, it doesn't have any footholds he can use to climb on it (he's a very active 12 month old, who would be straight over the top of a coffee table).

I would recommend some kind of physical barrier. Even if he understands 'no' and stops doing it, there will always be boundary-pushing days when he has another go and if there's a chance the telly could fall on him it's not worth the risk.

We opened up a playpen to box ours in, now he knows he can do it, he won't stop!

Strap it to the wall

OneMoreThenNoMore · 18/12/2013 07:45

Our tv is bolted to our (very heavy, solid oak) TV cabinet. Have you checked to see if your tv has holes in the base to secure it to the stand (ours already had holes for this purpose).

We have bolted some of our furniture to the walls too (eg a wooden DVD case).

Our old tv cabinet was perfect for baby cruising and toddler climbing; we put the coffee table in front of it for a while and that helped. In the end though we bought a taller and sturdier cabinet.

gamerchick · 18/12/2013 07:49

You can strap the TV to the cabinet. My parents used dog leads. If you Google it'll throw some types of fastener up.

I just used a fire guard. You get used to it being there.

Thanks! Will look into strapping down tv - finances at the mo means no new unit just yet. Wall mounting isn't an option as it's in a corner because there's nowhere else to put it.

He's now figured out how to pull himself up on his jumperoo also....Hmm
