Want to try Amber Necklace/anklet for teething, but...

I want to try Amber Necklace/anklet for teething, as my 8 month old is suffering badly, but… my DH is a sceptic, and resorts to science for all the answers, and says there is no evidence that amber can help. Apparently the "healing properties" found in Baltic amber is succinic acid, and the only way that this can actually be absorbed into the skin is if it reaches nearly a boiling point in temperature, obviously not going to happen when just wearing a necklace… blah blah blah…

But I see so many stories on here and other parenting sites, where mums swear by them. Can anyone help me find a link to show any evidence that amber can help with teething? Or is my DH right.. again…?

as one of the skeptics, I sort of have tried it. At least I used to wear a lot of amber when my wisdom teeth were cutting. My wisdom teeth ached for yrs. My dentist gets twitchy every time she looks at them [frgrin].

Agree with lily on the teething powders, one mnetter said rub sugar onto the gum. Worked wonders even if I was thinking 'hmm way to give baby a sweet tooth' Smile

2 days to work sounds a long time and probably means the teething pain has stopped anyway.

You could argue that buttons on clothing is a chocking hazard too, but we don't worry about cardies or t shirts with buttons at the neck. Proper teething necklaces are strung with cotton and will break before your baby's airway would be compromised. You must be sensible and way up risk. Little hawk does not wear them overnight. They will not be for everyone, but they have worked wonders for my son. It is worth pointing out that the placebo effect usually only works for the subject, knowingly participating in a treatment, so I think that this can be discounted. Having read and researched it, i also could not see how in the world it could work. But it absolutely does.

I have a rock that keeps away tigers (bought it from Lisa Simpson)

Those saying amber does in fact help - no, it absolutely does not. Paracetamol helps, ibuprofen helps, any perceived benefit from amber is coincidence, pure and simple.

I'm confused. If the baby or you wear it as an anklet how will they chew on it?

AlternativeMoniker53 · 12/12/2013 23:18

...resorts to science for all the answers

Well, just WTF! As Dara O'Briain said, "I'm sorry, 'herbal medicine', "Oh, herbal medicine's been around for thousands of years!" Indeed it has, and then we tested it all, and the stuff that worked became 'medicine'. And the rest of it is just a nice bowl of soup and some potpourri, so knock yourselves out." Give the poor child some real, proven, regulated pain relief. The necklaces are fashion accessories and you may as well tie a plague-bag around his neck.

They don't chew on it Thants, it has a magic painkilling aura.
