8 month old not babbling - should I worry?

Just that, really...dd is 8mo and isn't babbling. She makes lots of sounds - she laughs, coos and says "aaah", "eeee", "ah-ah" etc, but no consonant sounds - no ba, da, ma etc. Other babies her age all seem to be babbling, and I remember my eldest saying "ba ba ba" at 6 months. She can hear and responds to her name. Should I worry or just be patient?

Same here. 8 months too but doesn't even respond to his name yet! Watching...

Same here too!

I'm guessing it can't be that rare then if there are 3 of us searching for an answer at the same time!

Development isnt a gradual upward curve most of the time but a spiky climb. My DGS2 also 8 months is too busy playing with toys, crawling, standing, trying to cruise, falling over, and stuffing spagetti and cake in his mouth to bother with babbling Grin

In other words he is concentrating his efforts elsewhere.

StetsonsAreCool · 10/12/2013 21:05

My dd didn't really babble much, ever. I remember when she was about 16mo and she was saying about 10 words (all animal noises), I was thinking 'but she doesn't say bababa/mamama so she isn't developing in the curve'.

She's 3.6 now and never bloody stops. She does more babbling now than she ever did as a baby. Sometimes they just don't. I think there are other signs to look out for on the development scale - some of the sounds you're talking about, eye contact, pointing etc.

My vote would be 'be patient'

AHardDaysWrite · 10/12/2013 21:14

That is reassuring emi! sneezecake, I wouldn't be as worried if she was doing other things - but she's showing no interest in crawling, pulling up etc...she rolls and sits nicely, and she loves playing with toys (well, bashing them!) but that's it. She's very smiley and makes lots of eye contact.

Thanks Sneezecake and Stetsons. It's reassuring because, like Aharddayswrite, i've also been worrying about it. Mine doesn't point or crawl either. My ped was indifferent about that but was more interested in the babbling. Hence my concerns. I often try to get his attention and say mamama or dadada but he seems bored by it :-(

Hi. My first son was babbling loads ie da da da da da quite early but my second just didn't do it nearly as much. I remember asking the health visitor about it when he was around 9 months and she wasn't concerned as he was making little sounds like ee, aa. I really don't think he babbled much at all and can't remember what happened but he's now 4 and never stops talking!

sneezecakesmum · 11/12/2013 12:32

I wouldn't worry much about the not crawling unless it is prolonged. There is quite a wide range for crawling and so on. DGS didn't really sit well until 7 months then in the space of a month but in 1 month did all stuff. Shock Before that was quite happy on his little fat bum. Actually it was when he was put into those cute little tights he took off. His little fat legs are so constrained in trousers he can't move at all!

Banging toys together is on the developmental curve btw and I think it precedes the clapping.

"Development is a journey, not a race". A good quote to remember Smile

Dd1 and dd2 didn't really babble much, and certainly not by 8 months. They were both in full sentences by 18 months. Dd2 particularly would have complicated sentences like "actually I really, really, really dislike apple skin" was one of hers at about 19 months.

Ds did babble a lot. He was the slowest talker, and also had hearing issues (glue ear).

Littlegiraffe · 12/12/2013 21:15

Another one adding reassurance here. DS didn't babble at all until almost 12 months, I was really worried. Then, pretty much bang on 12months, the words just starting coming... And coming.... And coming. He's now 19months and is a right little chatterbox, and is putting 3& 4 words together already.
8months is still very young, try not to worry.

Thanks all - feeling a lot better!
