lovely 19 week baby, slept like an um, baby until now, suddenly waking all hours of night AND refusing daytime naps. Nothing much has changed I don't think, in terms of routine - what could be causing this? He was sleeping 10 until 7am, then we dropped the 10pm feed and he was fine 7-7 for a while until suddenly two days ago - kaboom. Last night he was wide awake for about 3 hours between 2 and 5am and he's just started yelling again now - not his usual thing at all. anyone any ideas?

teeth?
This happened to my ds at around this age

stupidgirl · 27/02/2004 22:07

Yep, teeth was my first thought too.

Tommy · 27/02/2004 22:09

Hungry? Ready for solids?

Lisa78 · 27/02/2004 22:11

I'd have thought he would be showing other symptoms if he were teething - I'd agree, ready for solids

melsy · 27/02/2004 22:13

I had the same , went to doc about her ezcma and got it sorted , he suggested getting her onto one bottle of hungry baby milk (just the last bottle only) & a small portion of baby rice in the eraly evening 5:30. Could be teeth aswill as hunger , I know very hard to decipher.

3GirlsMum · 27/02/2004 22:31

Yep have to say the same as the others, either he is teething or hungry.

Ear infection???? Was always the problem in our house when this happended. When they are upright the fluid doesn;t accumulate in the middle ear. When they lie flat it does. Usually hits its worse about 20-30mins after lying down so it is a real possibility of being the cause if they go to bed ok and then wont settle then start screaming about 20-30 mins later. Once they are awake and upright the problem goes away as the fluid drains then when you put them to bed again and lie them down they sleep for a short while then wake up screaming again.

If this sounds familiar give some calpol and that should get you through tonight. Then get emergency docs appointment tomorrow and get their ears checked out!

I agree, sounds like and ear infection to me.

Evita · 28/02/2004 10:04

I would say something's bugging him if he's awake for such a long stretch at night. My dd didn't get teeth until much later and I never found they bothered her that much but maybe they do in a much younger baby? Perhaps it's a knock on effect of you dropping the 10pm feed. Why don't you put that one back in agan for a few nights and see if it helps?

melsy · 28/02/2004 10:56

I was just thinking , I was told the 10-11 bottle is one of the latest ones to drop. My dd is 5.5 months and I am yet to let that one go, its the one that gets her through. May be that should be the hungry baby milk.

my ds2 still wants his 10pm feed and he is nearly 9 months and has 3 big meals a day

squirmyworm · 28/02/2004 14:59

thanks for this everyone - really helpful stuff. Little poppet slept through last night and seems much happier today. will watch the ear thing in case it was a factor. solids here we come and I'll keep looking for that first tooth! (just realised should have put this on the sleep topic - must have been too tired to notice!)

DS got his first tooth through at this age and it unsettled him - also had a very red cheek with it.

bobthebaby · 29/02/2004 03:14

My ds had unexplained fussiness at this age, and it got better. Sorry I can't be more help. He didn't get teeth for ages after and I didn't introduce solids until 26 weeks by which time it had definately gone. I just think it's something they do at this age, but it's worth getting the ears checked just in case.

handlemecarefully · 01/03/2004 08:40

It it is an ear infection you would expect a fairly impressive temperature....
