Advice on night time for 4 y.o

Hey -

I have a four and half year old DS. We did potty training about a year and a half ago and he did pretty great and we were out of nappies very quickly I can remember no struggles and minimal accidents!

However, when trying it at night time it wasn't working so I thought hey what's the big deal I'll leave him until he's ready! Little did I know (until recently) you have a two week window to get them dry at night after getting them dry in the day? Fantastic! Missed that then.

I've tried waking him before I go to bed for the toilet, and he's gone and still had wet sheets. It's been a difficult process because he gets very ill once a month so the night training has to go on hold for a few days and we are back to square one.
Then he started reception and I didn't want to introduce too many changes so I left it until he settled. He has settled now So I'm thinking it's time to make a real go of this as he is only getting older and soon will want sleepovers!

I think the biggest issues are:
1)he is just used to pull ups and used to not waking up.
2) I've always started and stopped the training so he may not take me seriously!
3)DRINKS!!!! How do I tackle this one. He has about 25ml of milk in a cup with a story and then he is allowed a 'sippy' drink to keep beside the bed in case he needs a sip throughout the night.

I want to keep the sippy drink as me and DH are big drinkers and always wake up In the night for our own 'sippy drinks'!! I have tried to limit or take away the drink at night to keep him dry but I feel this is soooo mean! what if he really is thirsty!? And if he's not actually thirsty he sure as hell screams the house down to get a drink and then I think you must be thirsty now with all that screaming.

Is it ok to keep pull ups and do night training or do you have to completely bin them and go for pants at night time! We have bath time in the evening after school and I just worry if he ends up having wet sheets with the rush of the school run in the AM and no time for a bath before I do not want him smelling of wee-wee in school!!

( I feel like a bit of a failure having a 4yo in school and not dry at night Sad )

All Advice welcome, thanks in advance!

Xx

Where on earth did you hear that "two week window" thing? It is total rubbish. Night dryness is determined by when they start producing a certain hormone - it is physiological not behavioural. So I would leave your DS in pull ups and just wait until he starts to wake up dry. 4 is not late at all - a GP won't view night wetting as a problem until 7 I believe.

that 2 week window you have mentioned is nonsense btw. night wetting not considered an issue until age 7/8 ish.
