Hi.

Sorry to post a similar post to one below but a bit worried by my ds's lack of words!

He babbles ALOT and makes word like sounds. His understanding is amazing and he can point to anything I ask in a book etc.

He says mama, dada and uhoh.... But a lot of his friends of similar age and a bit younger are talking more.

Thanks.

Should also say he makes noises for clock, horse and anything hot.... All of which are appropriate sounds if that makes sence!

based on my two your dd is starting to talk early. my ds left it until after 3 years to get talking in earnest but that was considered within the normal range.

My ds started properly talking at 19 months, it was like a tap was turned on over the Easter weekend! Before that he said mummy, daddy, uh oh, woof, miaow, Jack (cats name). Everyone that comes across ds says he's a bright lad, even people that don't need to & he's a very social confident kid.
They all get there in their own time. It's way too early to be worrying about it. To ease any worries, just get really into talking to him, asking questions & reading lots of books together. We had a baby sign book which had loads of basic words in, which he seemed to learn over that Easter weekend.

If you're worried you could talk to your health visitor about it, ask her to do the CHAT test with your son.

Ds babbled until about 2 3/4 was beginning to get worried as me and dp were the only ones who could understand him
All of a sudden hes speech took off and by 3 could be understood around 80% of the time
Now at 4 can speak perfectly
Dont worry yet they all develop at their own rates so try not to compare with other children, I did this and it drove me crazy with worry

cupcake78 · 27/11/2013 20:25

Honestly I don't think its that unusual! I didn't talk till 2+ ds didn't till nearly. 2 as well. Oh how I wish I could turn back the clock Wink

Wouldnt worry. My 16 month old only is starting to form words - says ba for bath, who for shoes, nat nat for night night. Is coming but comes on quick when they realise it helps them get what they want Grin

Marsha101 · 28/11/2013 05:40

Thanks for all your replies. I do feel reassured. It's just so hard not to compare to there peers sometimes! He is very bright and understanding is great so that is the main thing I spose.

Never compare your baby! They all develop at different rates. My nearly 15 mo is at the same speech stage as you & I'm not at all concerned. If she's still like this when she's 4 I'll start getting concerned then Smile

miniandfloss · 28/11/2013 06:28

Please do not worry he sounds completely fine for his age. Children can vary so much at this age. The babbling and good understanding are the skills needed before words develop and he has both of those. (I'm a children's speech and language therapist in my other life!)

WhispersOfWickedness · 28/11/2013 06:36

He sounds completely normal to me Smile

elQuintoConyo · 28/11/2013 07:00

Very, very normal for that age.

Please don't compare your DS with others, it'll drive you round the bend.

DS made similar noises for ages before anything sounded like a word. He's just two and last week said his first sentence: I saw a monster (while ppinting at our bedroom, not scary at all Hmm ). His 3-month-older cousin spoke earlier, others at nursery only have a handful of words - all normal .

Marsha101 · 09/12/2013 07:37

Thank you for your responses... Even since I posted we seem to have had a few 'words' popping up here and there!
