One year old not standing.

DS2 just turned 1 and he's not pulling himself up and he has really only been crawling and sitting up for a couple of months. His crawling technique is still pretty commando. Was looking back at what DS1 could do at a year and he was climbing stairs, stacking rings and play-feeding his toys! DS2 is small (2-9centile) but he always has been. HV
cancelled meeting for his one year check this week and I'm still waiting for her to re reschedule. Just wondering if anyone has had similar experiences or has advice. Many thanks.

There is such a big variation in when children do these things. A friend of mines ds walked at 10 months and both mine were around 14 months.

Your ds sounds like he's doing fine.

He's fine. DD is 14 months and only got the hang of crawling, standing and cruising in the last month. All in their own time.

On her first birthday DD2 wasn't able to get herself into a sitting position, could just about balance enough to sit up if we'd put her in that position, wouldn't/couldn't put her feet on a solid surface (looked like someone from the old Guiness advert with the Riverdance legs), didn't crawl or pull herself up on anything.

As DD1 hadn't crawled until she was exactly 11 months I wasn't that bothered about the lack of mobility, until I realised DD2 was a year old and couldn't sit up independently.

For DD2 it turned out that her lower limbs are hypermobile - she's had physio which helped a bit but not as much as a week spent barefoot on the sand during the summer holiday. We notice the hypermobility most when she's tired or has had a growth spurt - she can fall over air!

If you're concerned, take your DS to the GP to have his hips checked and to share that concern. S/he may reassure you and say there's nothing to worry about or, as in our case, refer your DS to a paediatrician.

Sounds just like my son was at a year old. He would pull himself around commando style but wouldn't stand or cruise unaided. He made steady progress and walked at 15 months. Children vary so much. My friends DD was born 3 days after my LO and walked at 10 months fully unaided and I remember thinking what's wrong with my DS for 7 long months but as he's got older I now realise there's such an age spectrum for 'normal' and your LO is simply concentrating on something else. Don't worry at all

My son flatly refused to stand until he stopped bottom-shuffling at nearly twenty months! It was a nightmare as if we were outside I had to keep him balanced on my hip while juggling shopping, car keys etc, as if I put him down he'd immediately sit on the (wet, muddy) floor & set off!

RandomMess · 24/11/2013 16:02

2 of my 4 were late movers full stop, late at sitting independently too. Also late at walking - I think they were just too busy doing other stuff to bother!

Varya · 24/11/2013 16:05

They vary and a school of thought is that they stand when their spine can support their weight. Feel certain his fine and that you need not worry.

My DS1 wasn't standing, crawling, rolling at all at 12months. When he was 14 months old he just stood up one day and walked across the room, out into the hall way and into the kitchen.

We had to buy proper shoes the same afternoon as he wouldn't stop.

They do things so differently. To me all sounds ok and advanced to me ! But if worried then speak to your HV.
