We did when my DS was that age and he as walking. We went for an artificial one with lots of plastic tat decorations so that he wouldn't be hurt if he pulled it over.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 22/11/2013 11:10

We did, but we screwed a cup hook into the window ledge behind it, and tied it to the hook - and that did seem to work.

mum23kidz · 22/11/2013 11:13

Yep. We put a playpen around it when ours were that young.

Norudeshitrequired · 22/11/2013 11:15

Get one and just put a think piece of string around it and tie it to something fixed like a door knob or put a little hook in the wall and tie it to that.

ShoeWhore · 22/11/2013 11:16

Yes we've always had a Christmas tree. Does your house have picture rails? If you knock a little tack into the picture rail and tie the top of the tree to it with white thread (or thread in a similar colour to the wall if they are dark) it is surprisingly effective at keeping the tree upright!

We also used to place the Christmas tree in a corner with the sofa next to it so it was partially protected in that way too.

Fuzzymum1 · 22/11/2013 19:35

All of my children have been around 11-12 months old for their first christmas - we had a tree each time and they've been fine - yes they were interested in it but after a few days of them wanting to touch all the time and teaching them to 'be gentle' just like with the cats and they were fine. Last year was the hardest as my maine coon kitten arrived on december 23rd and we ended up with the tree up on a 3' high cupboard to protect it. This year the 'kitten' is huge and a lot calmer but still quite nosey interested in stuff so we're not sure how it will go!

ZuleikaD · 23/11/2013 07:46

Yes, we've always had trees regardless of who's walking etc. Never tied them to anything and it's always been fine. Last year though we did go for a small (4ft) one and put it on one of the blanket chests just because with three children the living room gets pretty crowded otherwise.

SatinSandals · 23/11/2013 07:49

Yes, we have always had one. If you have several children the eldest could go their entire childhood without a tree if you took that view!

Small 5ft one, up on a coffee table in the corner of the lounge. Baby can reach the coffee table standing up, but not the tree. Win win!

IsThatTrue · 23/11/2013 13:02

No but my DS would try and climb it he'll be 1 on 8/12 and he's walking. He climbs everything though.

neolara · 23/11/2013 13:04

Yes, but you need to make sure that all your decorations are shatter proof and not glass. The knocking-the-baubles-off-the-tree-and-throwing-them-around-the-room stage lasts for a good few years.

Aquariusgirl86 · 23/11/2013 13:06

Last year with a 18 month old and 3 month old I put it on a table, kept it safer, this year I'm contemplating putting it in the conservatory (which is next to the living room) so that we can see it but shut the door so it doesn't get too touched! They are 2.5 and 15 months so they and the two cats will constantly be all over it!

Mumof3xx · 23/11/2013 13:07

We always have one

The yr ds1 was nearly two we had a fake one and he had it over constantly

The year ds2 was 18m we had a real one and it was no problem!

monicalewinski · 23/11/2013 13:08

Of course you should have a tree, you can't babyproof everything!

YY to what neo said re checking that decs are shatterproof and not glass though.

MaryZygon · 23/11/2013 13:17

We had ours in a playpen for years.

And one year we had it up on a table with the playpen around the table. Because ds2 was a climber.

The only year I wish we hadn't had one was the year of the kittens [sigh]

I bought felt decorations from etsy and ebay and put the tree on a coffee table. DD was 10 months and took her first solo steps just before new year.
