Bad dreams in children

I am wondering if other young kids have bad dreams involving their parents. My son is just 4, and last night he woke up crying because of a dream. When I asked him what happened, he said "Mummy left me". I reassured him that I loved him and wouldn't leave him, he seemed fine with that & then went back to sleep.

This morning he mentioned the dream again. I asked him what happened, and from what I can gather he dreamt that Mummy left him in a car while she went off with a friend, and (in his dream) he became very upset. I haven't done anything like this before so I don't know where it came from. A few months ago he had a similar dream, about Mummy leaving him. I'm just not sure if this is normal or whether he has some deep-seated fear or insecurity about this. Apart from occasionally disciplining him for bad behaviour (when it's warranted), I tell him I love him all the time and have never intimated that I would leave him. Would appreciate hearing if anyone else has experienced this.

i can honestly say i have encounted this i used to have a very similer dream when i was young and the only reason i remember it is because i had it for about a year straight but i was a bit older than him the only thing you realy have to remember is that it is only a dream and remind him tha it was just a nasty dream and your not going no where a childs imagination is a lot bigger and stronger than ours and where wecan tell the difference they cant has he been around other kids who could be cruel who might have put this thought into his head without even realising it lke when your not around
is he in school like just started or just started when he had the fist dream if thats the case its just hes worried hat when you drop him off at school you might not come back for him i know it sounds silly but we cant look into a childs mind but only there dream but please dont panic its just a phase
and please take reasurance when i was growing up and kids were having dreams about ghosts and monsters i was dreaming about someone breaking in and trying to kill me or the house burning down its just a way they deal with emotions of anything that has happened
