DS wetting himself several times a day

DS is 4 and a half, and is settled in school (as far as we can tell) but has in the last fortnight started reporting that he has wet himself at school, but didn't want to tell the teacher. And then proceeded to wet himself once or twice in the evenings, and this evening, three times. We are concerned that he is sitting in wet pants at school, and are surprised that when he has his accidents at home, he prolifically wets himself (rather than getting caught short, with damp pants and a hasty run to the toilet, as was previously the case when he had a very rare accident).
I took him to the gp last week, and no urine infection was detected, and we gave a further sample to be analysed at the lab, the results of which we await.
My question is, how do we help him? Is this behavioural? We have asked his teacher to keep an eye out but she said he is good at asking to go to the loo so was surprised, and hasn't noticed the accidents at school. I was half hoping it would be a UTI because then they can treat it, but I don't know what to do if it's emotionally related. He is a sociable boy, and seems happy on the whole (if a bit histrionic at times). When it happens we try not to react beyond saying "oh dear, never mind, better change your pants and trousers" but I am actually quite worried.

Snap.
I could have written your post about my dc. I've decided to get the Health visitor round for consultation because the GP visits were never getting to the bottom of it. Am keeping a food diary and actual toilet visit record.

It's so frustrating, isn't it. We've tried everything but dc is no drier.
Really hoping something will change soon.

Have you looked at ERIC the incontinence charity? They have a helpline, advice and forum.
ERIC

Tbh am seeing what the HV can suggest before turning to them.
Dc doesn't care if wet/soiled either. Spends a long time in denial.

Hope it turns around for your son soon!

Stay strong lots if encouragement never say it's his fault. You might want to try pull ups if he is having a bad day because things Ike this an really bring you down. I had this problem when I was 7 and my mother shouted constantly I couldn't help it and it scared me.

Thanks for responses, I will take a look at Eric. The gp rang today to enquire as to his progress as the second urine results were borderline, so they don't want to prescribe antibiotics yet. He stressed the importance of playing it down it if it happens as it can cause terrible anxiety to them. He thought it may simply settle down if it wasn't due to infection, and that these things can just happen, but will refer on if it continues through next week. I am hoping it won't, as he was ok today.
Catty, I am sorry you had such a bad experience.
Roller skate, hope things settle down for you too. It is a worry as it can get them down and I am worried about teasing at school if it carries on.
