Newborn not settling in Moses

Not really sure where to post this so have plumped for here. Am sure it's an age old issue but DS is one week old and just won't settle in the Moses basket. He's fast asleep until we put him in & then he wakes & cries until he's picked up. We've tried swaddling, warming the Moses mattress with a hot water bottle & using Ewan the dream sheep without success. He will sleep fine on us so at the minute DH & I are taking it in turns holding him throughout the night. Obviously this isn't ideal & we are both shattered. Any tips??

Cocoonababy. Buy it! It changed our lives Grin

With Ds, the midwife advised putting him down in the end of the basket curled slightly round and almost on his side. This was to make him feel more supported (like he would have been inside me). Seemed to work for the first few nights til he got more used to the open space.

Have you considered swaddling? Both of my boys needed swaddling (I just swaddle the arms though and leave the legs and hips free.) for at least the first two months; it makes a lot of babies feel more safe and secure and makes the transition from your lap to the Moses basket/cot easier! - I feed them unswaddled then when they have finished and are all sleepy I wrap them up (in blanket all laid out ready close at hand) then I put then back on the breast to relax them again, then pop them down. Swaddling also prevents their Moro reflex waking them up in those early weeks.
Just another idea you may want to try! Hth!

Oops I've just re-read your OP and seen you've tried swaddling already! Please excuse my baby-brain!

I must be missing something about this bed nest. It looks like a box, is as big as a Moses basket and costs £109 JUST TO HIRE??

worsestershiresauce · 20/11/2013 15:44

The hire is £50, which I think includes delivery (but I could be wrong there), and the balance is for the mattress and fabric sides which you have to buy, as obviously you can't rent those second hand.

I'd pay it if I had another, because if you bf you don't even have to get out of bed to do the night feeds, and there is no re-settle afterwards. Simply feed the baby to sleep and then roll over.

Money well spend imo Smile

"Feed the baby to sleep and then roll over" Do you mean it has a tithole in the side? ;)

worsestershiresauce · 20/11/2013 15:58

It's a bednest.... it opens to the side....
Are we talking about the same thing here?

The tit hole thing though.... that's very funny. Can you imagine the marketing Grin?

I'm getting on to Dragons den right now.....
